I read in a Mag that the perfit time to harvest a crop is when the buds close , otherwise they will appear airey .. can anyone tell me about this ? thanks
I usually harvest when the pistils are big and swoll up, and or depending on trichome colorarion. A bud being "airey" is either genetics or sometimes unoptimal growing conditions.
There is no perfect time to harvest. From the peak floral stage (when the stretch stops and the floral clusters gain most of their size and resin secretion is high) until the rejuvenation stage (past late floral stage. The plant is already way past its peak flower and resin production, and spurt some last new vegetative growth), anytime is good depending on the type of high you want. An early cut plant (when trichomes are clear or cloudy) will produce a more cerebral high, a later cut plant (when trichs turn amber) will be more of a body stone. With every extra day, you will gain in yield, but depending on strain, that early cut lighter, cerebral high might be preferred by the grower to a bigger yield. For a newbie it's not easy to know when the plant has achieved "your" type of stone, but it's like with everything else, you learn as you go along. You'll hear lots of people say cut like this or that; 1/3 amber, 50%-50%, 2/3 amber, whatever. They are all right in a certain sense. I don't know what it might mean when they say the buds will close, perhaps when resin production starts to slow down. The reason for airy buds (and what's wrong with airy buds? It gets you just as high) can be both genetic and due to external factors. Time plays an important part in bud constitution. Sometimes when I grow big plants, I cut the top buds (when ready), bring the lights down and give the lower, smaller buds an extra month. Those extra long-flowered buds will generally be rock-hard.
I had bit of a suprise today
And not sure why it happened(but i know of the last two posters so hope they will know)*smileS*
I have a plant that has spent bang on 8 weeks flowering(well 8 weeks yesterday)
And today for the first time i checked the pistols(going to check again in a sec)
I took two small leaves from two diff cola's(Mid way down)
And to my suprise they were about 40% amber
Great really i want a strong hit,but i was not expecting it to be ready for another week at least
The reason i was not expecting it for another week is because this is the 4 or 5th grow i have done with this strain(Northen lights)I had a clone and been cloning off it ever since)
I am wondering what has happened with this grow so that it is Ready(More than ready)a good week before my last grows of the same plant...Infact on my last grows,I chopped at 9 weeks,And even then i only had say 20% amber
And tbh even tho the trichs are 40% amber now(will be doing another check in a min with more leaves(From many diff cola's)
But yes even tho they look done by color
The plants themselves look like they could pack on a bit more weight(Think some nuggets Could join up more)
The reason for this could be the warm weather we are having(But would that explain the early amber trichs?)
Little info
small indoor grow
400 hps lights
regular 80 deg(90 on a very very hot day(only had 1 or two days that hot)))
Mmm soil grow
Basic fert scedule
Everything i done on this grow i have done on all my other grows
Anyway sorry for hyjacking this thread(i really should wear a mask)*smileS*
bud grown under a hps will always be more airy than bud grown outdoors.
The bud can be grown more compact though. Since I have improved my growing my weed has become denser. Was infact inmproved airflow that made the biggest difference for me in bud tightness and ultimately yield...
