BSC Colombian Gold in soil, hydro and coco

Hi folks

One of my favourite strains is BSC Santa Marta Colombian Gold, just a beautiful sativa, takes 12-14 weeks indoors, love the sandalwood peppery taste and the mellow smily high, my fave daytime toke, average (f not a bit below) yield, airy buds but lots of frost for a pure landrace sat:

Three days ago over in The Ultimate Sativa thread bonecarverOG posted the progress shot of his Mozambigue sativa plant in the tiny coco cup and I thought, hell, I gotta try that, and as I had a Colombian Gold clone rooting in my bubble cloner and a coir brick stting on a shelf, I decided to give it a shot immediately. Here's the clone, a nice big 9-incher:

The roots weren't that long, less than an inch, but lots of them:

I potted her into a 2-litre pot of freshly soaked coir that was still really damp:

I always add a drop of superthrive and a little bit of Formulex and seadweed extract to the water in my bubble cloner, must have overdone it a little as this clone has the beginnings of overfert on her lower leaves, slight clawing and the tips are a little yellow/brown:

Cheers zam, I've explored the soil performance of this strain with a couple of runs from seed and with a few clone runs, now I am interested in seeing if I can grow them hydro or coco as I'm keen to move away from soil growing and I've only grown indica doms in hydro before, never tried coco at all.

I gave her a dose of Plagron Alga grow, Atazyme, Superthrive and Formulex and pinched her top off, she seems to have taken to the coco very well, growing a couple of inches in three days:

The overfert hasn't increased and the top growth is fine, no clawing at all, so she's happy enough:

Last year a friend begged me for some cuttings as he'd lost his hydro crop to spider mites, all I had at the time in the bubblerclober was Colombian Gold and Graefruitbowl. This is a guy who normally only grows White Widow and Northern Lights, e's a heavy indica kinda guy. He loved the grapefruitbowl, but moaned that the Colombian had 'gone fucking mad' I went to have a look and wow, there was this absolutely enormous Colombian Bush in a waterfarm that had taken over the entire room. I had warned it it was a pure sativa and it would grow very fast and stretch 2-3 times, but he ignored my advice and vegged her for 6 weeks at an EC of 1.8 using Ionic nutes. The foot-tall, pruned into several tops clone I had given him was now at least 8 feet tall, he had 6 foot of vertical height, so he's had to tie these huge long arms to the walls and ceiling, there wer 10-12 branches, most being 4-6 feet. I was blown away, it made the room seem like the rain forest, just big thin sativa leaves everywhere with this 4-foot Grapefruitbowl struggling for light amongst the sativa foliage. I advised him to cut her back before going into flower, but again, he thought he knew best and flipped into 12/12 without pruning. Anyways, I only saw her again, 8 weeks later when the Grapefruitbowl was harvested and there were just arm-sized colas hanging on yoyos all over the place, looked like she was only 2/3rds of the way done to me, certainly needed another month or more. Looked like she was gonna yield at least half a pound, hard to tell with the airy buds but could have been a whole pound. Anyways, he complained that it was taking too long to finish and the buds were airy, but I assured him if he waited another month, he would be rewarded with some mighty fine conoisseur smoke. BTW, by this point he was running her at an ec of 1.9.

Anyways, I never saw her again, he chopped her at 10 weeks as he'd run out of patience, which to me was a crime, I would have loved to see her at 12 weeks, fully mature. I fell out with him over a girl so I never found out what the finished product was like, but at 10 weeks it can't have been ripe.

So, to show just how much ot a sativa-loving masochist I am, here's a Colombian clone (same cut as he had in his waterfarm) in a homemade 2-gallon DWC bubbler. She has been there for 10 days or so, the bubblcloner was full, so I decided to try rooting this clone in the DWC bubbler itself, I just plonked her into a bucket of hydroton after scraping the bark and applying clonex gel, I ensured the water level came up to the hydroton so the base of her stem is always touching the water, and she has now rooted, the first little roots are visible at the bottom of the net pot. She has just started to grow, I'll veg her for a while, pruning her into many topes but keeping her no more than 18 inches tall, then I'll flip her into 12/12, that way I should be able to keep her under 3 and a half feet.

It's been 3 months since I harvested my last Colombian clone and my stash of those buds is running low, so I am desperate to replenish!

Hola Hempire!!!

The clone really seems to like coco. It is nice to see Colombian grown from beginning to end, so I will take my seat now :lurk:

Offtopic: Have you still smoked the speedweed you got? Sorry mate but I had to ask because that seems like an interesting strain.

Happy grow man!!!

Hiya herb, thanks for popping in. The Speed Weed is still flowering, one went into 12/12 on 9th of November last year the other on the 9th of December, so I make that 136 and 105 days respectively, which means they are in their 19th and 15th weeks, they are looking really good, the older one still has som,e time to go, but maybe only another 2 weeks as half the pistils are now orange and the new growth of buds has pretty much stopped. I could maybe take her down now, but having waited this long, I want to wait until they are just right. I am very glad I hit the lower popcorn buds on the older one with some C99 pollen as I am keen to growe these genes again but a 20 week strain is a bit too much, even for a sativa masochist like me, especially when I have the Colombian that takes 12-14 and the Zamal/Haze that takes 16. The wait has also been possible as the HazeSkunk and Blueberry ladies I started flowering at the same time as the Speed Weed have been harvested, cured and smoked in the meantime!

Add to that I have three Ducksfoot ladies that are at 15-20 weeks and will probably take 22. I'm so keen to get the Speed Weed and Ducksfoot harvested so I can get some Durban, Swazi, Malawi, Original Haze and Colombian Red Haze plants in there. I might leave the Durban and Swazi till later, but the others are itching to be grown. I might just be able to find room to squeeze a Mexican Princess (my pet name for Speed Weed x C99) in there somewhere. I've split my grow in half with a sativa cab and an indica cab, this is how I can manage to have these ultra-long flowering strains going for so long. I still have some Speed Weed beans left and I'm going to reveg and clone the older lady as she looks a dead ringer for Oaxacan Gold, I'd like to make beans of pure Speed Weed just to preserve some classic Mexican genes. Now I've grown the Speed Weed and Ducksfoot, I'm happy to take on some other ultra long flowerers like Vietnamese Black and Colombian Black, those have both been on my 'must smoke' list for years.

P.S. Zam, if you need someone to test grow the BSC Colombian Black indoors, give me a hlloer, I'll find room for some! lol

Hola!!!

You have mastered a good way to grow sativas indoors. My longest run strain has been Original Haze x Skunk1 -> 140 days, but I see no problems to take some longer flowering sativas to my closet. Actually, I have been planning to do it, just want to get ahold of some unique sativas. It´s nice that you are keepin the speed weed available for the next generation. Do you like your skunkhaze?

hey BH very nice as always, tell me, do you have similar quality shots of other sativas you've grown out over the years under the 250 HPS?

I like the HazeSkunk, the one I have by Sunshine Seeds is Sagarmatha's Western Winds x Skunk #1, not all that easy to grow, I never got close to growing it to it;s potential and they were always unhappy with nutes and water, I have the last clone flowering now and she sems much happier than the others.

Hi muddy, here's some shots of Female Seeds Zamal x Neville's Haze:

After 15 days in the dwc bubbler, the Colombian clone has grown roots about 6 inches long so I've topped her and eagerly await a growth explosion. She has done really well to grow roots so long in just 15 days as it take 12 days to get Colombian clones to grow one inch long roots in my bubble cloner. It's the easiest to root strain I've grown, never had a cutting of Colombian fail to root. The bubbler is just a 2 gallon plastic waste bin covered in silver duct tape with an airstone in the bottom, a hole in the lid for the 14cm net pot of hydroton and a cheap 5.99ukp aquarium air pump. Cost less than a tenner and seems to work great.

So the race is on, DWC vs coco, I'll post some pics of the soil clone tomorrow.

BH - thoroughly enjoying this thread, especially your tale about your impatient friend with the monster plant - I know several like that too...:)

Look forward to seeing the next stage... :chin:

Cheers man, that impatient friend has gone back to growing the usual White Widow and Northern Lights. The other night I was at a party and took some Blueberry and everyone was 'wow, this smells of Blueberries and it's getting me absolutely toasted' so he wants a Blueberry cut from me now. I wonder if he'll see the funny side if I give him a Thai clone instead? I have a couple rooted now, they look fairly similar to my Blueberry clones at this stage in veg. I've just done a backcross of Blueberry male to a Thai clone, seeds are forming on the Thai now, looking forward to seeing how that one turns out.

Here's the Colombian in the DWC bubbler, she is doing fine, roots are really white and healthy, I have supercropped her as she was growing tall really fast. I'm gonna use supercropping to turn her into a bush with loads of tops before popping her into flower, I'm hoping to yield a lot off this one as the Colombian is my daytime smoke of choice and I'm almost out of Colombian buds so need to replenish my stash.

You're a good man, zam. I've really fallen in love with the Colombian Gold, I have loads of clones, I cut more than I needed to allow for some not rooting, but they all rooted, in fact that makes a 100% rooting record for the CG now, every cut I've ever taken has rooted inside 14 days in my lil bubble cloner.

Sadly the Colombians were destroyed wo I never got to see how they flowered in coco and dwc, but a friend still has a cut i gave him, so one day soon I will try again.
