Brown Edges..

Hey this is my first time to post, and its also my first grow.

I kinda skipped out on the soil, because i got frustrated and couldnt find any of the brands i was seeing on the forums, the closest thing i have here is a Lowes and home depo. I havnt found any hydro stores...

Anyways, I got this Miracle-Gro Product(thinking it was decent):

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=130307-446-130307&lpage=none

The seeds started out great, but after about 1 week, they've stopped growing, and started geting brownish on the leafs... its kinda hard to see in the pic... but they also started to curl upwards... Im not sure if its because of overwatering? or what.. im really a newb at all this and still trying to figure it all out, so any help you guys can give would greatly be appreciated.

> Pot too big. Small 16 ounce cups with drain holes work ok.

> Too little light at first; bulbs should almost touch the top of the seedling at the beginning

> Don't use miracle grow soil mix that contains longterm nutrients; may say last 3 months

Unless these are special, start over and apply the above suggestions. Your seedlings have become too leggy (too stretched from lack of light)

Get them outta there! Their getting burned by the ferts that are in the soil. And will die soon or just stunt and not grow right.Homedepot or lowes should have at least one soil that is organic or with no ferts. You want organic potting soil with no fertilizer. Also for future reference you need too place those lights a little closer the plants a stretching a lot.

Goodluck, and welcome to IC

orginally the lights where far away, thats why they are streching so much, but i just recently changed my setup so the lights are close.

Is it possible to transplant them into different soil at this point? if so how can i do it so they dont die?

yes its possible just be careful. dig the soil around the plant with a spoon and pull up the rootball. Well there woulnt be much of a rootball, just try to not to rip off any roots. and when you place it in new soil cover up a lot of that long ass stem for more support later on in its life.

Yeah follow Hazetoker's advice, it can be done and will work well. Once they get in that new soil, if it is good, they will perk up within a day and start showing some new growth. Try to get some Fox Farm Ocean Forest or Pro Mix. FFOF can be gotten at any hydro store, I hear Walmart and Home de Pot have Pro Mix but I have not found any there. You can definetly save them, don't give up hope. Oh and remember to use Perlite in your mix. And move those lights down.

At Lowes you should find some seed starting mix which is good for seedlings. Smaller pots with lots of drainage. Let them dry out thouroughly after watering.

Well i went to 3 stores, Home depo, Some Garden Store, and Lowes, none of em had any of the names yall said, but i did find MG Organic Potting soil:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=78595-446-78595&lpage=none

I read somewhere else on the forums that this was ok stuff...

So i decided to transplant them into this, i've been all over the place but cant find any decent soils. I figured i didnt have much time to transplant them they are pretty bad now, the transplant went well they kept most of there roots.

I dont know of any "hydro" stores in the area, but im not sure how to find em any ideas? or just open up the phone book ? and look under garden?
hehe

Aynways ill keep u guys updated on how the transplant went ill probably know tommorw or monday.

Thanks for the Help!!!

I love this forum

I have heard some good things about that MG organic so you may be ok. If it says there are ferts in it do not fert for the first week or so. Good luck.

A "hydro" store is a hydroponic/organic gradening supply store. They have a few in every state it seems. You may have to search the internet for one in your area.

Actually looking at the ingredients it is not that great. The bark is bad - from what I have heard. The whetting agent is not so good either - you want good drainage, not good whetting. I would suggest driving to your hydro store. Get some Fox Farms Ocean Forest, mix it like 3:1 to 2:1 with perlite and you have an excellent growing medium. Some other things you will need:

digital pH meter
pH up and down
nutrients - only needed after the first week of growth. I uses Pure Blend Pro line, but ask your hydro store.

Good luck.

Yeah, i just got up this morning, and they are looking pretty bad, ill give them another day, and if not just start over.

These where just some tests seeds, crappy seeds i found, no big deal, i didnt expect them to last, but was sort of hoping =P

Ill put a big list together and try and get everything i need and head over there some time this week.

Thanks for all the help

The wrong soil is the wrong soil - you can't fool the plants - -

if it's winter where you are also - - might have to give it a couple weeks till stores start recieving spring stock; spring is comming!

There's a bar near the top of the page - it has several buttons

My ICmag Site Menu Forum Menu User Menu Forum Jump Search Calendar Log Out

click on search - a box drops down,,,,
a few minutes reading there should find something that will work and is available around you

Hydroponics stores carry FoxFarm soil - - it's $24 a bag, but the buds it grows are priceless

good attitude too, I killed a bunch of these bitches before I got decent results. That's what God made seeds for.

Right?
