Breeding with Auto-Flowering Strains

Greetings,

I received some seeds with C99 as a part of the parental heritage. I was warned not to plant these before, I believe June, or they may flower too early. I have been wanting to try some C99 genetics for a long time due to the reports of the type of high, but this is the first time I've heard of any auto flowering expressions in the line. This will thwart my medical card growing style, which is to grow a limited number of plants, but make them big. I plant in winter so when it is time to plant, the "starts" are 3 or 4 feet tall or more.

I have grown a few strains that seem to want to flower as soon as the roots are constricted by container size, which may be a type of auto-flowering trait. I thought it was time to educate myself. I did a quick search to find some threads that discuss auto-flowering in general and how to deal with them. I searched for thread titles with "Auto" in the name. I was surprised to only find threads with specific auto-flowering strains. This made me want to start a thread where breeding auto-flowering plants can be discussed.

The first things I want to find out are:

1.) If an auto-flowering plant is crossed with a plant that does not have the auto-flowering expression, can I expect at least 25% of the plants in the F2 generation to express non auto-flowering traits?

2.) If a fast ripening auto-flowering plant is crossed with a plant that does not have the auto-flowering expression and is a long ripening strain, can I expect to see some of the F2 generation to have fast ripening traits, but not the auto-flowering trait?

3.) I would expect, in theory, that the answer to my questions would be true, but does anyone have actual experience with doing this breeding, and does reality match the theory?

Of course, I'm assuming that the auto-flowering is due to one gene and that gene is dominant, which may be overly simplistic thinking.

Thanks in advance for your help,

1.) If an auto-flowering plant is crossed with a plant that does not have the auto-flowering expression, can I expect at least 25% of the plants in the F2 generation to express non auto-flowering traits? Yes, only 25% auto, 75% photo.

2.) If a fast ripening auto-flowering plant is crossed with a plant that does not have the auto-flowering expression and is a long ripening strain, can I expect to see some of the F2 generation to have fast ripening traits, but not the auto-flowering trait? Pretty much the same as #1...with small variance. F2 if crossed with auto...then yes.

3.) I would expect, in theory, that the answer to my questions would be true, but does anyone have actual experience with doing this breeding, and does reality match the theory?

Thanks Aridbud.

From your answers, I would surmise that the auto-flowering trait is recessive. Do you think I'm understanding you correctly?

I'm gaining confidence that I should go ahead and plant some of these seeds early, like I do my other strains. These seeds are part Kali Mist, part C99, part Afghani, and part Romulan. Unless all non auto-flowering traits from the results of the poly hybrid were meticulously culled for generation after generation, I would expect some or most to be non auto-flowering.

If all plants are auto-flowering, but I love the high, I can simply cross breed to my other non auto-flowering strains to get children that will likely be all non auto-flowering in the F1 generation, and mostly non auto-flowering in the F2 generation.

If I am understanding this correctly, this should be very easy. I'll post results here.
