A voter initiative to close most of Los Angeles’ medical marijuana dispensaries leads as officials count ballots this evening. Measure D – which would cap the number of storefronts at about 170 – leads 64 to 35 percent, with 6.5 percent of votes counted. Measure F does not contain a cap on dispensaries and is losing 43 to 56 percent. An estimated 400-700 dispensaries are open in Los Angeles, which has tried and failed to regulate the businesses since 2007.

Mayoral candidate and city councilman Eric Garcetti narrowly trails competitor city controller Wendy Greuel in early counts.

City Attorney candidate Carmen Trutanich – reviled by the mmj community – is losing 41 to 58 percent to Mike Feuer.

Turnout is expected to be very low, about 20 percent of L.A.’s 2.4 million registered voters.

We’ll have updates every 45 minutes tonight as the numbers come in.

10:40 p.m. Update:
Measure D’s surprise lead continues to hold as 6.93 percent of votes are reported counted. Measure F continues to lose by a seemingly insurmountable amount. Garcetti and Greuel are neck and neck and way too close to call. And Trutanich’s loss looks all but inevitable – which would be the second time medical marijuana patients flexed their democratic muscles to stop him.

11:03 p.m. update: Garcetti takes the lead with 7.7 percent of votes reported counted. All other contest results remain the same. A couple news outlets are calling Measure D as passed.

11:23 p.m. update: About 8.45 percent of the vote in and we’re ready to call Measure D as passed, Measure F as failed, and wannabe city Attorney Trutanich as out. Garcetti and Greuel are going to go down to the wire. Congrats, Los Angelenos, on picking some medical marijuana regulations. More reactions tomorrow.

Maybe folks will wake up and realize that the majority of people don't want neon pot leaf signs and the like thrown in their face.

Could use a little tact I would say.

Prop D, limit on pot shops in Los Angeles, passes
Wednesday, May 22, 2013

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles voters approved Proposition D, which caps the number of marijuana shops at 135 in the city and raises taxes on the operations.

Prop D received 63 percent of the votes Tuesday, which is more than the simple majority needed to become law. Prop D also establishes additional limits on the locations and hours of pot shops.

Voters were asked to consider a total of three different proposals regulating medical marijuana shops in the city.

Ordinance E would have also capped the number of clinics at 135 but without new taxes. Supporters abandoned that measure, choosing to back Prop D instead. It lost 65 to 35 percent.

Ordinance F wouldn't have limited the number of clinics, but would have put in place stringent controls, such as audits and testing for pesticides and toxins. But it also failed to get the votes, going down 60 percent to 40 percent.

Garcetti won and 135 Pot Shops, now allowed. Not sure if, there are details of How and which 'pot shop' will be licensed! Going to be as interesting as the original laws for mmj. jpt
