Bluesboy's First Diary

Hello everyone, I'm getting my new grow up and running and thought it would be fun to put together a diary of my latest efforts in the growing arena.

I plan on updating the diary at least once a week with photo's and information from the grow room. I'll be using my trusty Canon digital camera and Comic Life to update the galleries.

This week there isn't much happening, just wanted to lay the ground work. I'll be working with 3 varieties this time around. I have one bag seed I started while I was bored about 3 weeks ago and it's impressed me so I'll be keeping it around, friend of a friend said it was Herrer doubt he had a clue. The other two strains are Elite Genetics offerings, SFV OG x Sour Kush and Tahoe OG x Sour Kush. I know there is a bit of skepticism surrounding Elite Genetics on ICMag, I hope to at least demystify these two offerings.

The Bag Seed has been going strong since day one. I'm starting all seedlings under a 40w floro fixture then they'll be moved into the Dark Room DR120 under a 600w HPS for a bit of fine tuning and flowering. This lady has been very vigorous displaying strong vegative growth and a shockingly strong odor already.

I received 10 SFV OG x Sour Kush and 4 Free Tahoe OG x Sour Kush Seeds. In the first 24 hours of germination 9/10 SFV's and 4/4 Tahoe's had sprouted and were transplanted into 16oz seedling containers, I expect to see happy sproutlings emerging in the next 48 hours.

Thats all I have for now, I hope you all take the time to peruse my diary occasionally and certainly hope you all can contribute a thing or two to my approach and development of my plants.

Hey Bigtimer7, thanks for stopping in. I snagged my pack off of cwbay, doesn't seem to be too popular but has some familiar names and some startup breeders.

Had my genetics delivered in a matter of three days, 9/10 germination rate and four free Tahoe og x sour kush seeds just for fun.

stay tuned and keep blazing,

Bluesboy's Diary Update 09.12.2008

Hello everyone, hope all is well in your worlds. To my surprise last night my last SFV OG x Sour Kush seed popped and was planted with the rest of the seedlings bringing the total germination rate up to 10/10 SFV OG x Sour Kush and 4/4 Tahoe OG x Sour Kush, a perfect batch :jump:

Just two days following the planting of the germinated seeds all (cept the late germ) have sprouted above the surface of the grow medium and are looking excellent.
:woohoo:

Thanks for swinging through Prof Sublime, appreciate the kind words. Comic Life is a really cool program for photo editing, I've always had a good hand with photoshop but this makes it so easy.

Thanks for the luck I'm sure I'll need it hehe, well its raining now so off to collect some juice for the babies.

Thanks for coming in Core, I've dabbled in the past but this time around I'm doing things right. I really appreciate your offer of assistance, I have some minor discoloration/spotting starting on my little bag seed killer I may have you take a look at if the rainwater I'm using now doesn't bring about a change for the better.

Anyways, I'm off for some dinner. I'll be sure to swing by your current thread when I get home and see what your up too :lurk:

mmmmh rainwater alone won't do it .....you realy need something to measure ph..otherwise you will keep dabbling around....rainwater is around 7ish and you need about 6.3 to have a killer crop....if you have soil that is?
and you should not feed them for atleast a week ..or....2....3 depends on how 'hot' your soil...meaning much nutrients...

I hear that Core, I've got some heavy cost going into the garden I better head to my local hydro shop tomorrow and pick up a PH meter, is it worth investing in a combo unit that will do PH and PPM or what do you think?

I have no problem making an investment just wanna make sure I make the right investment so its a one time purchase, maintenance aside.

Thanks,

Bluesboy

cellardweller

well I cant comment on that as I use a ph test made for fishtanks for my water but I wil coment on the fact that I like the "comic" relief here, so ta say. Also like the strains you runnin. Havent seen much on em at all..
I'll be droppin popcorn all over the place.

hehehe i would invest in a combo...it works easyer in the beginning ...this way you can't overfeed your plants.....but as cellard already gave away....a simple ph testkid can do the trick....^^

Bluesboy's Hydro Shop Haul

Bluesboy's Hydro Shop Haul

Alright folks, I was unhappy at my inability to properly sustain the bag seed and knew that nutrient delivery to the kush hybrids was just around the corner so with that in mind I swung out to my local hydro shop to buy some long overdue supplies.

5729509_13_08_p1.jpg

I decided I was going to give Earth Juice liquid organics a try this time so I picked up the basics, a bottle of grow, a bottle of bloom, and a bottle of Microblast. I also decided the guessing game was over and purchased a digital pH and a digital TDS/PPM meter.

5729509_13_08_p2.jpg

I did some playing around with the two meters by mixing a small container of of 5.8 pH 200ppm Grow/Micro solution and watered the bag seed with it. She is showing the start of some type of nutrient deficiency or lockout that I want to to get under control before I move her under the 600w.

If this doesn't help over the next few days I will post close ups of the deficiency signs I'm seeing to see if you ladies and gentlemen can help me further.

Be good,

Bluesboy

A question that comes to mind right away is what order of operations should I follow?

Just now when brewing the small mix of 5.8 pH 200ppm earth juice grow/micro mixed solution I discovered that after balancing the pH of the rain water to 6.0 I added a few drops at a time of the Grow and Microblast solutions in equal parts until the ppm was up to around 150. I then retested the pH of my solution with the nutrients added and the pH had plummeted by over a full point. I rebalanced the pH of my solution let it sit for 30 min. or so, agitated and tested again to find my end result of 5.8 pH and 200ppm that was fed to the plant.

So my question is, to avoid balancing and re balancing etc. what is the best approach to mixing up a batch of nutrients like this?

Also it says on the microblast that it can be used as a foliar feeder, anyone have any input on this approach to micro nutrient delivery?

thanks in advance,

Bluesboy

first nutes and additives...measure strenght and then balance out with PH + or PH -
ohw and a piece of advice....just keep it simple....but you'll learn that down the road

Core, thanks again sir. Your really helping me refine not only my approach but my perspective on growing. Do you think that incorporating the micro nutrient blend with the grow formula may have been getting ahead of myself?

I'm such a goodies kind of guy I can't help but want to purchase more delights for the plants but I surely don't want to overdo anything. I was already considering picking up the earth juice Catalyst and Meta K products, that would complete the earth juice nutrient line in my arsenal.

The catalyst claims to 'Contains molasses and other selected organic ingredients. Conditions soils and hydroponic solutions for better nutrient availability.' While the Meta K says that its a 'Natural potassium-based formulation for maturing, fruiting, and flowering plants that require more potassium.' Perhaps the later is only intended for use on plants that express a potassium deficiency in flowering?

Give me your opinion when its convenient Core, I want to round out and complete my supply of nutrients and supplements and get ready to fine tune the temp. and odor control of the new grow tent.

Others please chime in with any product suggestions or your experience with any of the products I've purchased or discussed..or even a friendly hello

yea maybe a little but.....maybe you should first try and produce a crop with just 'normal' nutrients.....that means a bottle of vegnutes,a bottle of flowernutes....some bloom nutes.... and a bottle of rhyzotonic for rootproduction....as to make it not so difficult at first..

but if you know what these products do to your plants and know how to ammend it you can add them to you feedsuppley for shure :)

Alright very cool, do you have a specific rhyzotonic you use? is that the brand name? I'm going to do a search now but any info you can supply regarding product selection and application, as always, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the guidance,

Bluesboy
