Bird Control Help Needed

The fucking birds have destroyed my tomato and pepper plants. the peck off leaf after leaf until all i have left is a stalk. Does anyone know of anything that will keep them away (other then the plants being bigger when i plant them)? I've got a scarecrow and some cd's on strings that flop in the wind.

I live in the country and use to have chipmunks terribly. I started putting cat chow out and there is always some sort of cat around anymore. But you never see a chipmunk.

There's a bird repellent made from a compound that is found in cannabis. It's also the grape flavoring from grape Kool aid. methyl anthranilate.
There's recipes on line for using grape Kool aid as a repellent.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I set up a couple owls and let the weeds grow up for a few weeks until the plants got too big for them to want to mess with. I was wrong about it being too big of a space for bird netting, may have to do that next year since i plan on covering the whole garden with leaves this winter and mulching again in the spring.
