In short, I'd throw out moldy bud.

Its not so moldy, just a little bud rot. I know that is mold, but its not that bad. And from what I read in that post the bud rot (Bo.....) strain doesnt have the (aflax...) in it thats bad.
I figured the butane and ethanol would kill anything that would possibly be living in it. That way I could use it in some butter for edibles. I dont smoke bho anymore, I just stay away from it nowadays.

I know I should just throw it away, I just figured if there was some way to neutralize the mold while saving the thc I should ask around.

I wonder if rinsing it with some water, then drying it again would get rid or the majority of the nasty stuff.
I'm not really concerned about flavor on this particular run, just salvaging what I can if possible.

yeah, that one link says to do pretty much exactly what I was planning on doing. bho, then ethanol dissolved and filtered (winterized). think it would be safe to make edibles with.

Some molds can produce an aflatoxin, this is very concerning and extremely dangerous to the immune system.
That being said, Botrytis: the most common type of mold on buds doesn't produce an aflatoxin.
However, the dead spores will remain in the oleoresin and must be removed through winterization and filtering with a .2 micron filter syringe.

You must absolutely be sure to identify your mold before proceeding.
Cut away and discard excessive mold.

Perhaps consider this a loss, and just put it behind you, I know all the hard work and time spent in the garden, throwing it out will suck and your heart will ache.

But the loss of the crop is much easier to replace than one's life.
Safe is always better than sorry.

Spores will float to the top whilst in cold water and resin/glands sink to the bottom.

Im pretty sure that I have the typical bud rot, the Botrytis one. But I dont know for sure, it just looks like all the bud rot Ive seen before.
I'm sure it is for the best to just toss it out. I just wanted to believe there was some way of saving the good material left in it.
Was thinking maybe doing an ice water extraction, then blasting that with some trim would work, but I dont know. All sorts of crazy ideas running through my head, enabling me to ignore the obvious one; toss it out.

I really have no reason not to. I harvested over 12 ozs off the one plant, and have 10 of good smokeable right now along with a couple oz of good trim.
Just feels weird. Like there should be something I can do. But I can always grow more if I'm not dead, so I think I'll toss it.

Ok, not hating here at all, but winterization in recent months has proven dangerous. Suggesting it is dangerous especially to the people who are new to bho. The butane left over has now sparked due to the freezer/refrigerators compressor kicking on. Its happened too many times to think its safe. I understand if you deplete most of the butane beforehand it is less likely. However no amount of bho is worth risking blowing up your house, children, significant other, pets or yourself. Dont take my word for it though. Check out the bho disaster thread. If you value your well being and freedom, you will stay away from riskier stuff than is necessary. All love here just want to see our community stay away from a meth lab stereotype.

I should have been much more adamant on the dangers involved with winterization.

I sometimes overlook the fact that some don't understand how to properly winterize.
My apologies.

When I winterize, the oil is purged completely before dissolving in ethanol.

Never ever put liquid butane in your freezer
^ For some crazy reason people are now thinking this is a shortcut they can take.

This is not how to properly winterize.
You are 100% Right...

I shouldn't of told a newbie to BHO to winterize.

Hey its all good i just felt the need to chime in. I think its absurd that people attempt blasting indoors or even making bho without educating themselves. When i started out i made sure i watched every tutorial i could and researched the shit out of it. Doing something wrong sooner is def worse than doing it right later. Continue on with the dank ass bho shots and discussion. Just remember everyone NEVER EVER BLAST INDOORS. My opinion of winterization is my own but i think it always presents danger. Shit ive heard of people blasting inside a walk in freezer, talk about a death trap!

I couldnt agree more. I would never blast indoors. Its asking to die. I blasted that today and got some really nice wax out of it. Winterizing it now. I'll post some pics up in a couple days when its done.

question...making bho soon....don't have a vac chamber...plan to heat purge...after the hot water baths....how long do i heat bho for..& @ what temp...also is 1 can of butane enough for an oz. of buds...ran through a stainless turkey baster...

Thank you Dreaded, and hello.

No vac, no problem..
Just gonna take longer.
Low and slow is key with no vac.

Keep your temps consistent, no higher than 120° F

1 can (300 ml) per 1 oz of material is the rule of thumb.
The best tip I can relay to you as a virgin to BHO production...

Start with small batches.
I.e.
If you plan on running an ounce, split into 4 runs.
Small runs give you an idea of how things are going to turn out for you.

Although a standard procedure, making this stuff, each person will have/develop their own routine that is best suited for your personal preferences.
