~BHO LOVERS~

I am fairly new to BHO compared to many people in these forums but I have been trying to make myself as educated as possible. From searching around it looks like the final product should be solid like hard candy but I cannot seem to get my batch to harden. I get good looking oil but it stays in a thick sap like consistency. Everything about it seems right except that it won't harden. I'm not sure if there is something that I am doing wrong or maybe it is suppose to turn out like that.

Any idea on why I am getting this consistency? Is it good/bad? And if bad what is the best way to fix this, and to make my oil better?

Sorry if this has been answered before but I feel as though I am doing everything right. I can post photos and method if needed.

p.s. I just use heat purging with basically a double boiler and a skillet.

The final product should be clear, if you prefer budder/wax, make a clear product, then turn that into wax.

The sappy product is actually preferred over the shatter hard candy, ever have a chunk of oil go flying across the room to never be found? The only time i ever got hard candy shatter is when my purge temps were high, like 180-190.

Clear? Meaning transparent? I would say my oil looks no different than a bunch of the photos I have seen on here. Just a light amber color.

I need to get a thermometer to find out what exact temperature I am purging at. I set the skillet for around 200 but the water and the pyrex dish isn't that hot (an assumption, but doesn't really get close to boil, and can touch without getting burned).

I don't mind the sap but from my understanding it isn't suppose to be like that if done correctly. And I haven't started messing around with waxes and budders because I wanted to perfect just standard purging and move on from there. And also because there seems to be a debate whether or not buddering is actually worth it.

yes when i say clear i mean transparent. Hmmm, how long do you usually purge for? The reason i ask is because 200 is kinda high, and pyrex contains heat very well, it could be possible you are decarbing(decarboxylation) the oil which would give you a very runny product.

Maybe I am doing it too high of a temperature, my fear is too low I won't be able to purge out as much butane though. I will try and get my hands on a thermometer though and see if this is the problem because it very well could be. I usually only purge for a few minutes though. Around 5-10, i try and wait until the bubbling seems to stop completely.

This may be my answer, I'll have to do a litte more looking into it though.

Dude... You only purge til it stops bubbling? There's your problem. There's a ton of butane left in your dish! I do a hot water bath for 30 minutes and then purge for hours on a heating pad.

I recommend water at 150-160f for 10-15 mins of each gram of oil. Change the water out regularly as it will get cold. Consistency is the key...

Yea i keep my water around 150, takes me about 1 hr to purge 5-6g of oil. I put my pie plate on top of a big pot of water, fits perfect and the large amount of water means less water changes.

Well I am repurging my batch from yesterday because of the obvious. Because I screwed this step up is it possible that I lose quality or potency. I suppose I will find out for myself but I wasn't sure if there is a definite answer.

Sorry if this has been answered before but i couldnt find it. I think i read somewhere a long time ago that you should let it sit for a while after finish purging. Is this true? What are the benefits it so? And how to know how long?

Letting it sit out will achieve nothing. You need to keep the oil viscous to allow the butane to escape, and you need to keep the oil warm to keep it in a viscous state. The heat from the water is what will keep it warm, allowing your butane to purge.

And Kiefsweat not trying to be a dick but that looks nasty. Properly purged oil will be clear and transparent, what you have is from a lack of purge.

haha. I know exactly what it is chief
it looks nasty, cause it is nasty. That's what i'm not smoking in my shit.

It does however look nasty cause there are pieces of plant matter all throughout it. Wax does not mean unpurged. If I was to make transparent oil in my process, I would have to purge less. Cause mine goes from clear to wax. And certain strains are just wax from the beginning and never change.

To me wax is still clear/transparent, just in a regular viscous state that allows it to be manipulated.

Shatter is clear/transparent as well, just has to be heated to bring it to that waxy state to dab it.

If you're referring to how some strains auto-budder, then I understand that. Never have had it happen to me in my experiences, but I've read the blue dream is a strain that is notorious for auto-buddering. I've also read that auto-budder can be a result of moisture being left in the buds, which makes it more difficult for the butane to escape leading to budder.

Still though, I'm a person that loves my smoke and my oil... but I wouldn't dab that if it were the last bit of thc in town.

And Kief sorry but I misread your post, I thought you were using that as an example of your own oil. Sorry about that... just looked so nasty kinda threw me off guard.

I have run multiple strains that auto budder. The craziest was querkle. Uk cheese does it, I've had sour diesel partially auto budder where 5 grams is straight waxy from the get go and the other 10 grams needed to be whipped to be budder.
