Sirdabs is definitely the man! I was actually gonna go with the first toaster oven you linked, but they were out of stock at walmart so I got the cheaper $20 one and it seems to work well for me. I'm sure he'll have some better suggestions though, great guy!

thats interesting man, how was the flavour with what you produced in the toaster oven? someone told me if it goes above 40 degrees c it will ruin the flavour.
I M bout to do a search for a mityvac brake pump bleeder

The cheaper toaster ovens work fine, just use it solely for purging, no heating up pizzas and Pop-Tarts ...lol

Most every model I've seen, the lowest setting is 150*F, but the oven is capable of holding a steady temp of 110-120F, just adjust the rheostat below 150F, keep adjusting the rheostat until you confirm a reading of 110-120F with your point and shoot laser thermometer.

Use a marker to mark the "sweet spot" on the rheostat.

You will have to pre-heat the oven,by turning the temp to 200F then turn the heat back down to the spot you made your mark on the knob.
One more thing about toaster ovens...

They provide gentle heat from the top and the bottom, making for a more efficient purge.

Most models I've seen lately have a "Keep Warm" setting, probably perfect temp.

And while you thank me, I also thank you, if i can help somebody obtain cleaner extracts, this brings me great joy.
That being said.....

Smaller runs and when first getting into solvent extractions, a nice long heat purge is okay, but if your intentions are for medicinal purposes,Please get a vac.

It is essential.
Please know I speak from the heart with only the concern of my comrades health, not condemnation.

Happy Dabbing,

Here is my setup..
Hehe .. Sky.... Always learning a lil something from your posts, again; thank you.

This^ is about the cheapest way to obtain a very consistent & even source of heat.
This setup allows me to nail 115° F perfectly.. I can slightly adjust the rheostat in very small rotations and control the temp in 1° increments.

It holds temp with zero spikes or drops in temps.

The griddle= 16$ Walmart... Rival, Deep Dish model
50 lb bag of All Purpose Sand = 3.50$ Home Depot.
Infrared Point and Shoot Temp Gun = 30$ Home Depot
A nice Digital food thermometer = 20$ish

This setup is strictly for the final vac Purge, LONG after the liquid solvent has dissipated.

As pointed out by SKH ... The heating system does spark when the element is heated.

I simply first empty a generous mound of sand directly into the griddle, then even the sand out flat then nestle the chamber into the sand.. Then I pour more sand around the side wall of the chamber.

I like at least 2.5”-3” layer of sand..this buffers the uneven poorly conducted heat from a cheaply made griddle, it essentially turns a very cheap griddle into a dependable precise source of low heat.

The food thermometer is placed into the sand in a fashion where the probe is touching the bottom of the chamber and the surface of the sand.

For me; the food thermometer allows me to monitor the oil temp without having to stop the vac process open the chamber and verify oil surface temps.

Food thermometer reads 138° F

Oil surface consistently reads 115° after many verification temp checks.
Hope this helps.
Happy oil making.

I was actually really, really surprised with the flavor. It was definitely toned down due to the fact that I also use ethanol to winterize my stuff and that's a lot harder to purge out completely.

My first little bit I didnt winterize though was absolutely amazing! I kept the toaster oven down low, below the 150 mark (after a 250F spike to warm it up. that was an accident, but turns out its actually worked better!)

I waited until the wax stopped showing any reaction, flipped it, and waited for reaction to stop again. What came out almost looked like honey comb and the flavor was intense. At first I thought I'd be ruining a lot of flavor, but that was not the case at all. I bet once you play around with it a bit you'll come to a similar conclusion. I was very nervous at first, but it turned out great.

Vacuum is the best though, just like Sirdabs says. Hopefully I'll be able to get one soon. Looks like about $300 is the cheapest I can find a decent quality vac and chamber for

can one of you good people tell me if this is suitable http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=479289247&pf_rd_i=B005O2LOQ8

and would the keep warm function on this be around the 40c mark? http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-...00AZSZYTO/ref=psdc24_t2_B008XMY1RK_B00AZSZYTO
thanks v.much

Hey, that little handheld vaccum is pretty cool man! Price tag is even better, if Sirdabs thinks its okay I'll have to give it a shot! I doubt it can pull anywhere near a perfect vaccum, but it's a hell of a lot better than nothing!

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped publicly, in PM or both.

I have now run the 160g of REALLY ROUGH dry sift thru a 70 micron bag and have been left with a more manageable 51g of dry sift.
4 cans of bute should be cool for that.

Now my cheap options are the toaster oven and the MityVac brake pump.

Which would give the better end product or would I need to use the oven first followed by the pump?

Would just the toaster oven be ok? At least the mrs could potentially get some use out of it too, so it might be easier to square with the boss.

cheers guys!

Sirdabsalot46n2, do not argue with SativaBreather, everyone is obvious that he is right!

All the above will work guys, but I've been down this road .

The hand pump is a workout to say the least.
If you want to start small, get the hand pump..(if and when you upgrade, this pump comes with spare parts to use for future endeavors)
(The gauge itself is pretty handy)(vac assisted filtering)

If I were in your given situation, buy the toaster oven first.

Keep the runs pretty small, 14g or less of starting material.

Spread the oil very very thin(AKA "thin film")

I will answer most further questions through PM,as to not clutter the thread.
As always, I thank all of you.

heat guns work really well too (to turn your wax into shatter or just purge the extraction) if you know what your doing. you need to hold it back about 6 inches to a foot depending on how stong it is and do a back and forth motion so it heats the oil evenly. i have gotten really good results in the past without harming the terps. im sure there is videos of it on youtube.

Once it gets that that point I find it a lot easier to work with on parchment paper. You can move it a lot easier, and also flip it to "cook" the other side. Once the majority of the solvent is purged you can usually start to handle it with your hands and it starts to develop a shatter texture. Depends on several things, but from what you have looks like it should shatter right up.

I also like the parchment because its so thin it doesnt really hold heat. I can take it out of the toaster if I feel its getting to warm and have it cool down really fast.

I found that if you freeze the oil first then scrape, it comes out easier and in the form of powdery crystals. This can then be scooped up and put on parchment paper. If you try scraping it warm, you can never get it clean off the plate.

This is a good tip, but can be worse as far as loss of product, even if my plate cools to room temp, scraping cold, or room temp oil, often results in shards of shatter flying everywhere. However, if the oil is too warm, I find it hard to get every drop.

Happy mediums, the hardest thing to find.
