No way man. Poo/compost shrooms (on average) are much more potent than brf cake shrooms. I've done both myself, and substrate means a lot.
No he's right substrate does not effect potency.. What you probabily experenced was different genetics or better growing conditions.. For mushrooms to be at there peak potency potential they must be cultivated right.. Bulk spawn only adds more yeild but doesn't effect potency.. If that were the case nobody would even bother with any other substrate..

sry to get a bit off topic but 79 do you know if there is a potency difference depending on when you harvest? I've heard that they are at peak potency right before the veil breaks, but i really dont think it'd make that much of a difference

When i lived up in Oregon we would go out to the country where the cows lived and pick em while the rain came down. The liberty caps were great. Hard to grow.

This is a good question but it's also very subjective.. Some people think once a mushroom grows it has the same amount of active chemicals throughout it's entire grow phase.. So if you were to pick a mushroom before of after the veil breaks it won't really make a difference.. The reason most people pick before the veil breaks is so they don't deposit spores and turn everything black.. So if you pick 5 small mushrooms that weigh 4 grams and 2 large mushrooms that weigh 4 grams you will probabily trip harder off the 5 small ones.. Reason being that you are eating more mushrooms even tho they are the same weight.. So smaller mushrooms usually mean a higher concentration of active chemicals.. But like I said before this is all subjective there are just too many variables.. Genes play the biggest factor in potency and don't let anybody else tell you different.. Substrate, size of mushrooms, number of pins, time of harvest and anything along those lines DO NOT effect potency.. Genes and the quality of the growing enviorment play a much much bigger role.. A mushroom will be at it's highest potency potential when grown properly with a proven sub-strain..

So my reccomendation would be to pick the mushrooms as the veil starts to tear.. This way you won't have to deal with mushrooms full of black spores.. Some people like huge caps so they wait until the caps of the mushrooms open up all the way and deposits it's spores.. Afterwards they either wipe the spores off the top of the caps of just dry them as is

yeah it's funny I remember checking on my cakes one day and seeing black shit all over the place (spores) and thinking it was all contaminated...hah dumbass. It's deff easier and less messy picking before the veil breaks but it just looks so much cooler when the caps are all open....

is it true that the cakes will no longer fruit on the spots where spores drop? sry not tryin to jack this thread but i got questions for days..not like we can't at learn somethin tho. I cannot wait for my next set of jars to finish colonizing and move away from the cakes and onto mono tubs:joint:

This is not true.. Cakes will still fruit in these spots.. The spores make a mess but don't do much damage... When the substrate is really distroyed from picking a flush and from spores dropping, here's a good technique.. Cover the holes in the monotub with surgical tape and put it back into "incubation" conditions for about 2 days.. Then re-introduce your tubs to fruiting conditions... This will let the mycelium recover and even grow some... Also if you don't like spores, you can always work to isolate a sub-strain that doesn't produce much spores, or a strrain that produces a lighter color spore.. How is this possible? Well let's think one minute..

Everybody has seen and probabily grew the most famous novelty Cubensis strain ever, named "Penis Envy"... One of the other most distinct characteristics of Penis Envy (besides it's phallic shape ha) is it's inabilty to produce a good spore print... The mutated gene that gives Penis Envy it's distinct shape is also what makes it not produce much spores... This potentially can be crossed with another one of your isolates... Thus your end result has the potential to display characteristics of the other parents qualities (whatever they may be) and also produce little to no spores... So You can have a potent, high yeilding and fast growing strain that also produces little to no spores... I seen a strain that was a "spore-haters" dream before... This strain was really the "holy grail" of Cubensis... The girl who isolated it names it "Magic Hats"... Named after the famous beer.. TRADEMARKED!!! DO NOT BITE OFF ME!!!! Even tho she bit off Magic Hat HAHAHA.. Well I guess it's OK then..... BUT WAIT!!! Make sure to always, I mean ALWAYS!! Give credit to the famous (haha yea right) 79TOWNCAR FROM ICMAG.COM!!! So experiment!! Get rid of them spores...

P.S.!! This is something I forgot and is also very useful.. Spores taste very very bad!!! Mushrooms picked before the veil breaks are always in my opinion much better tasting... I really want to see people isolate better tasting sub-strains... Nobody even talks about this in the advanced mushroom forums around the WEB.. People often mock me and I think they are stupid stupid people.. Tasty shrooms can potentially give you a very marketable product... Women will definetly buy good tasting active mushrooms... Also the fresh idea of it.. It's a great idea.. Thus it gives you an edge in a very agressive market.. If somebody can corner the market with a tasty shroom, it's all over!!

k time for a stupid ? ive been told that shroom spoors are legal in the us but not legal to grow or have is this true or no ? by spoors i mean the ones that make trippy shrooms lol

pothead-you heard right the spores are legal to possess ( and order online) in any state besides georgia and california..thats right suckers you may have way more leniant mj laws but you can't get the spores! Don't know why CA and GA are the only states where they are illegal...but once you start growing them...then I'm pretty sure it's a felony no matter where ya are. the spores you get online are labeled for microscopy use (for science...riiiiiiight)

79- I had heard from an inexperienced friend about the spots where spores drop not fruiting (1st mistake was listening to him he's given me plenty of bad advice before, got one mushie grow bag under his belt and all of a sudden he's an expert lol)
And very true about creating a substrain with no spores that'll taste better...just think why do mushroom chocolates always sell faster than straight bags...most ppl hate the taste. most kids only put like 2 grams in and sell the chocolates as 8th's...but thats a whole 'nother story
Very cool about the "magic hats" as they're my fav. beer, brewed in VT baby! :joint:
