Best way to clean a HPS bulb with melted mylar sheeting on it?

Hi all,

I have an old HPS bulb which I want to sell, but when I was dismantling the grow, some thin mylar sheeting (eg. Disney cartoon wrapping paper) accidently stuck to the bulb.

Having managed to remove most of it with a damp cloth, could someone please advise me of the best way to finish the job?

It's only a bit of a mess, but I don't want to scratch the bulb, so obviously don't want to use a scrubber for the dishes, etc.

- Which is the best cleaning solution/method please?

I was thinking pure alcohol, but I don't have any and it's hard to find around here.

Does anyone have any tips please?

Thanks in advance,

Peace

Hey British Bulldog,
I dunno, but I bet you could use a clean razor blade.
Don't scratch at it.
More like, peeling an apple...Or, like getting paint off of a window pane?

Hope this helps.
Good luck! :ying:

Oh no...
You could try the ol 3M Scotchbrite pad, try it dry first if that doesn't work try wetting the mylar with some vinegar then the ScotchBrite.. then buff with a dry cloth, make sure its not wet when you fire the bulb...
Do you have an old bulb to check to make sure the above techniques won't scratch the bulb?

best answer goes to gdawg, bulb glass is easy to scratch. acetone or lacquer thinner will do it if gas doesn't.

maybe dabb a lil gasoline on a rag on scrubb on it:2cents:
Those are both really good ideas. I would also try mineral spirits, but if you can't even get alcohol, well then good luck with that.

If you want to pay close attention, you can throw on a pair of welding goggles,
switch the light on, then wait for the substance to become malleable enough to
wipe off with towel.

throw that away man

i used to do alot of work in a photo studio and theyd toss the bulbs if anyone touched them with bare hands or got any sort of liquid or anything on them. even if you get it looking clean the bulb could be a serious safety hazard if someone starts using it. who would buy used bulbs anyways

Thanks for all the replies and apologies for the late reply!!

I used a combination of the info suggested and got a result!!

- I bought a non-scratch sponge scourer from the supermarket designed for non-stick pans, and used a few drops of a "Sensitive" Aloe Vera based washing up liquid, to carefully remove most of it.

There wasn't a whole lot there anyway, but that got most of it off.

Then for the last tiny stubborn bits I used a razor blade to very gently take off the specks left, then gave it another small clean with the sponge pads & aloe vera washing up liquid.......and hey presto! job's a good'un! There's nothing on the surface of the glass now, and no scratch marks, so I'd say it's the same as before the accident.

I tested the bulb and left it on for a while....no breakage or signs of weakness in the bulb.

Thanks again for the helpful tips!

Peace

When I got too close to the lamp, I melted my cap. I shaved the lamp with a #11 X-acto.
