Trying a grow in the southern heat. Lower U.S. What strain(s) can handle the heat and the dry spells?

You might try something in the Indica family like the Mazar or the Afghani. Plants that originated in Afghanistan or the middle east are much hardier in the hot to very hot climates. I grew the Mazar out here last year with great results in 90-100+ degree weather but with little to no humidity. Doesn't the lower southern US suffer with very humid temperatures during the summer?Watch out for mold.Good luck.

Yep... its humid as hell down here in Texas. I would recommend a fast finishin mold resitant strain.... maybe good ol' Reeferman's Norther Lights # 5

Sage or Northern Lights #5 would be killer for heat, mold and mite resistant

I can run almost all mine, and I run alot, up to 95-100 degrees max highs without any problems.

get some vietnamese landrace highland sativas....

those will kill for you in the heat, even though most people think afghani plants will do better, dont get me wrong, they'll do great BUT you'd be surprised how well vietnamese sativas will do in very hot weather...after all, it gets friggin HOT in vietnam in the summertime!

Good point. The humidity is also much higher in Viet Nam so they should be used to it.

Yup, not to mention Vietnamese Highland seeing 20 ft heights easily!! Give these things about 3 ft deep holes and you'll be in good shape for a gigantic plant come harvest time, perfect candidate for outdoor LST!!

I'd also recommend C99 outdoors

Hey growit, what part of southern US are you in? It depends cause In South west Cali the Temp is always between 70 to 80 degrees. And the humidity is medium to medium low, I think :chin: . It's perfect here. :friends:. To bad in a couple hundered years the south west coast'll be gone  . Hope it lasts that long. Hey, it also depends if your planing to do the out side thing like me, or go indoors.

Hey growit, If your doing it outside around Texas, I'd go with Nirvana's Durban Poisen. :yummy: . It's easy to grow and it can stand the heat (Durban=African Strain). And the seeds are cheap at SD.  . Hope my info helped  .

If you are in the Confederate States of America then you'll be dealing with humidity and mold-no doubt about it.

I have been growing in the swamps of the South for nearly thirty years and I have spent some pretty good money experimenting with dozens of strains from the seedbanks.
This is what my experience has taught me:
-First growing in Dixie can be brutally difficult in the summer (heat bugs mold) so pick your strain well because your gonna work hard for your crop
- Strains with 50% Indica or more are pretty difficult in the summer. Heat and mold take their toll.
-If you want to grow Indicas they do very well in the cooler winter months as well as late summer I get them started indoors under 18 hours then put them outdoors (-unless you are up in the Mountains in North Georgia,SC NC etc then you can grow whatever you want during the summer!)
-With winter growing I am always suprised how much frost some of the Indicas can take.
-If you are in the low country tropical varities and thier hybrids do fine. The posts about Durban and Vietnamese are right-on in my experience.
-I grow a Haze-BOG hybrid and have have mixed some landraces from Belize and Reunion Island

Also consider planning after the summer solstice around June 21. Though the plants don't get tall, you diminish a long exposure to pests, pigs and people and you end up with some nice bushes.

best to you!

Thanks for the advise speck. I like getting advise from a seasoned vet. I plan on veggin whatever strains indoors until they are about 18" to 24" then place them outdoors in early august to flower. Does this sound like a good idea or should I rethink my plan?
