Best reflector for a sun hut xl??

So here is my issue... I recently purchased a sun hut xl which is about 4' by 4' square and want to upgrade my reflector. I currently have a cheap aircooled reflecter running a 1000 watt hps and am doing ok, but I want to try to make this hut as efficient as possible. I am a med patient and am limited to 6 flowering plants so I tend to grow bigger plants.

I have been kicking aroud wether to buy a vertizontal for coverage, but wanted to utilize co2 since it is such a small, mostly sealed area so the other option would be a better air cooled model. With the vertizontal, I would have to suppliment the entire 10 x 10 room that my hut is in.

My question is, are there any air cooled hoods that are designed for a 4x4 area or am I going to get better coverage with the vertizontal? I also have a couple 400's I could add if going air cooled, but I would like to hit the 2 pound per 1000 mark before adding more lights. I consistantly hit 1.5 lbs per 1000 now and am just looking for a couple tweaks to try to hit my goal.

Any advice or experiences with vertizontals or grow tent lighting would be much appreciated! :joint:

I've got a Sunhut XL on order & just bought a SS GroPro 600W HPS ballast with a SS2 hood which should cover the 4'x4' area perfectly. Can't wait to get this tent - wanted a Jardin origionally but liked the oversized dimensions & included 6" flanges of the SH. I'd like to hear what other people are using in their Sunhuts too...

good question, i was wondering about the most effective hood to use as well, i am not in the tent you describe but still want to know what other folks think works best, i was playing with vented 1000's but couldn't keep the bottled co2 in the room as effectively as vertizontals with 600s, and no venting, there's always something new out there and i couldv'e spent more for the euro adjustable wing thingie, but it sure seems the verts are more effective. I'm curious about the SunHut XL you guys bought, because I just bought one (the SilverHut) I'm waiting to finish my current grow before I set it up. Their website claims its the new and improved lining. I have already lost plants in a previous tent. GrowRoom made by FloraCorp is a TOXIC TENT

jocat - any pics of the 600w vertizontal you're using?

I've heard that the silver Sunhuts still use the white plastic floor covering (toxic?) for the bottom of the tent & am debating on just using a 4'x4' flood tray instead.

I really like the footprint of the Daystar AC's and SuperSun 2's. Seems to work equally well for both 400/600w and 1000w lamps. I haven't tried any of those "big" hoods like the Radiant and CoolSun XL. I thought the SilverStar was a bit too big for 600w. Never tried it under a 1000w, but I think it might be good.

Lately I've been buying SS2's and also replacing my Daystar's with 'em. Not sure which actually performs better but the SS2's are just better built & designed IMO.

I "feel" that the Daystar is throwing out a slightly wider footprint than the SS2, just by looking at the angle of the long sides.

Thanks everyone! Sorry for the late reply I forgot about this thread. I ended up going with a 6" cool tube for the option to run verticle. I knew the footprint was going to suck when using the tube horizontally but dang... it's bad. I need to upgrade my fan cause my tube still gets relatively hot with my 465 dayton but it does work well.

My debate now has shifted to running 6 plants in a circle around the 1k or running four in the corners similar to a scaled back, tiny krusty type room (for the layout). The benefit to running four would be that I could veg the other two for a month and run perpetual.

What size of containers are you talking about? I spread out 16, 3 gal. buckets with room to spare for a regular horizontal lighting layout under my 600W hps SS2 hood. Haven't put any girls in the Sunhut XL yet - still working on the hvac & wiring, but these tents seem huge to me.

old yeller- 4 gal square buckets. I would love to be able to run higher numbers but am limited to 6 flowering due to med restrictions so I have to grow some big-uns to get any kind of yield. 12-16 medium plants in one of these seems ideal to me. You should do great with that.

bongo - throw up a pic of your tent when you get it laid out - i'm facinated with vertical lighting layouts, but it would kill me to put my new SS2 hood in the closet & run a bare bulb grow now.

The supersun 2 is the best hood on the market that's I've seen. It tested the best when a member (Pico I think) did testing on all the hoods with a light meter.

On top of that it's really well made and about the same price local hydro shop, on ebay w free shipping and through the cheaper online stores comes always to about $150 shipped or picked up. Like plantlighting it's like $109 but ends up $150 shipped. Ebay from seeds etc 99.9 rating it's $149 shipped. Local hydro shop is $141 but huge risk around here.

Finally got my Sunhut up & running - The S&P TD150 is keeping the inside temps @ 75 degrees with outside @ 71. Decided to stick my 4x4 T5 in there with the 600W hortilux since i had the room, & use that side of the tent for bringing the new girls out of veg & into flower.
Found a few pinholes, but no big deal - will touch up with some black gasket sealer. I gotta say that i really like the new version (all silver) & for 200$ it beats the pants off of a diy project for me.
I guess i'll never know if the Secret Jardins are better.

Bongo - i know this is an old thread but i've changed my Sunhut lighting - now i've got a 432W 4x8 T-5 in there with the 600W HPS instead of the 4x4. Tried the 600W HPS in a SS Supersun2 hood in the middle but the edges were still too dark for me. If i had to go with one light for this size of tent it would be a 1000W for sure. Got no complaints with my 2 light set-up though - wouldn't change it unless i was to grow 1 strain at a time, but that isn't likely since i've got 9 strains going right now...

Geez, i feel like there's only 3 or 4 people with Sunhuts here & am real curious what other users think - oh well, mines great & i wouldn't even trade it for a Jardin.

new sunhut silvers are great.. and i believe if you look up the info they are actually larger than 48inches x 48 inches .. i wanna say like 53 in or something...
