Im looking to get a portable ac (10-12k). what experiences do people have?
what would be the best model/brand out there for a grower?
thanks a bunch.
~Joe
There is a growing sentiment based on the findings from Skeletor, that portable acs are not suited for growing (even the dual hose models leak co2 /smell)....
That being said, there may be ways to seal up the leaks
i have a soleus 14K btu porto. I have replaced it 2 or 3 times--it is not reliable. My latest replacement has lasted and works well, but the odds are against you so i would avoid soleus.
Don't listen to the people that keep quoting a so-called expert on porto (skeletor). Using porto works fine if that is your only option for stealth purposes; you'll just end up having to use more co2. Saying portos are not suited for growing is like saying flouros aren't suited for growing. It might not be the best or ideal, but it sure works--peep my threads.
Edit: gotta be dual hose, forget the single hose units.
yeah, i don't have the option of not using one. its either use one or kill them... not much choice. I was checking out your grows. Very nice job man. I'm gonna have to online order a AC cause its impossible to find a good one in January in the stores here. I saw a brand called 'sunpentown' that people were talking about in other threads but I never really found a consensus of 'this is the model you want'. I want to make sure that it turns itself back on if theres a power outage, as far as emptying water etc.. I don't mind doing stuff like that. I just want something solid thats going to be reliable, don't mind paying extra for that 'right one'
I keep searching around. let me know if you hear of anything.
thanks a bunch for the inputs!

Go with GE brand I think. Do not buy a HAIER, my plastic exhaust fan exploded. For those of you fearing odor, control odor at the source, vaportek & carbon scrubber. You can also put a O2 gen in the exhaust. I have a CO2 meter and the loss is insignificant. In a sealed room setup you are providing CO2 anyway.
Those of you lucky enuff to grow in cold weather climates you can exhaust the ac into the house.
Yeah, no doubt a dual hose setup is the only option.
I got the soleus 12k btu unit, it does what its supposed to do as far as blow cold air, I did tons of research on which one to buy but when I was looking for em they were hard to find as they are a seasonal item. So I ended up lucking out by looking for an online company that is based in my area and calling them to see if its cool if I can come and pick it up that day and I did. supposedly it uses evaporative cooling meaning the unit cools itself with the water it accumulates, but the pos leaked all over my carpet and I had to tear that part out as it got mildewy, at that point I just stuck it in its own reservoir on stilts and that bitch was filled up halfway in like 5 days, too much work for me, so i decided to get better ventilation going and now my temps are good and I got more living space, the thing also exhausts out the window through a window kit which kind of kills the stealth factor, pos costs like $650 too, HTH
BTW, used it only once and I think the dehumidifier doesnt even work and I dont think the temp controls even matter as mine blows the same temp air regardless, pretty shitty....
i had a portable a/c and it sucked. it was 12000 btu. the ONE MAJOR PROBLEM with these things is that they can't be used in an extreme heat conditions, aka grow room. they also recommend that you keep it no further away from a window exhaust than the tube reaches. this is crutial! i had to hook up the hose to an inline blower to help suck out the air. being i had NO windows near my grow it was not a good purchase for me.
if you need this for a grow room, i would not recommend it.
it was a big waste of money for me.
atleast i was able to sell it
i have now gone with a split-type a/c unit for my grow op.
this is basically a ductless central air system.
and that folks, ^^^^, was well worth the investment!
