Hello,

I wanted to see if anyone could suggest what medium to use for mother plants?

Also, are Flourescent lights ok for a mother plant?

Regular potting soil with Espoma Plant-Tone. Plant-Tone has all the nutrients a plant needs. Once in awhile foiler with liquid seaweed.

BTW: Plant-Tone can be found at Lowes or Home Depot

i keep my mothers in a mix of 1/3 part organic soil to 1/3 part wormcastings and 1/3 part perlite. feed them guano tea twice a week, trim and keep size every two weeks. keep in 1 gallon pots, when rootbound trim like 5-10 clones, cut rootball in half and replace bottom of pot with fresh new soil. flouros are fine you dont want them growing too fast, there moms.

What jaykush said. On the lighting side of things - I keep mine under only 96 watts of flourescent light and they still grow too damn much...

Ive got my moms in FFOF organic soil and im havin a hell of a time with nute and ph issues. They are my first attempts with soil and mothers all together! Things are lookin better now, its trail and error when your learning.

Try using a medium that has been inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi. Once colonized, the fungi extend the root network and decrease the amount of ferts needed, particularly phosphorous.

Since mother plants will be in the soil for extended periods, the medium ought to have ample opportunity to become fully infected.

My mommies soil is, soil and I dont add much pertilite. Basic fertilizer flour lighting. When i need clones I increase the light intensity for nice new growth. This nice new growth is why my clones always work. The clones are always good. My last mother had a stump like a tree i thought about making a lamp out of the stump.

Cadillachydro: FFOF has plenty of nutes to maintain a mother for at least 3-4 weeks with just 6 to 7 ph water added. Why are you adding nutes? Are you trying to produce a lot of clones?

If you want to add nutes, try FF POM products like 5-5-5- or 3-4-3. They contain "mykes" and are designed to work with OF and shouldn't cause a problem, unless your water is way off PH wise?

Also, adding a mycorrhizael innoculant will take care of most ph problems in organic soil. A tea made of 1-3 tsps worm castings, and 1-3 tsp molasses per gal of water will innoculate your soil. Adding 1-3 tsp of Maxicrop Seaweed and 1-3 tsp of composted manure is also good for the micro herd and overall health of the soil.

Bubble tea with an air pump for 24 hours or so at ~ 70F before adding to your soil.

Just my two cents. Hope this helps.

I keep a Mother in hydro. A small but sufficent DWC, very easy to maintain in another room, I barely fertilzer her and use low light levels to control growth, I get way more clones than I need. but I have other strains I take clones of right before I flower, so no mothers, has its advantages and disadvantages.

Hey buddy,

Here is a recent link with a good discussion reguarding FFOF and a feed schedule. I had a helluva time figuring that stuff out. Now I only feed Cal/Mag 2-0-0 during the entire veg. That stuff is just too hot.

Hope this helps,
