good question & nice choice!
tbh, i didn't know anything CAN before you posted. please excuse my ignorance on that one :badday:
found some of their songs on youtube though that sound very interesting; pretty modern music for 70's rock me thinks, no ?

out of the blue and straight from the guts, i would have said Kraftwerk are one of the best german "bands" ever.
mainly for their great inspirational work with electronic music, with virtuality and for their influence on other artists and whole music genres like 80's synth-pop and 90's techno. the beatles of electronic music indeed!
sure, they might be the worst acting live band ever seen on stage but at least, the 4 elderly guys are still playing live shows these days at all :D

..They called it "Krautrock"
Yes , Can is a well known German Band and they had some good Music .
The first 3 Records of BAP where also great , its a German Rockband from Cologne and they sing in a special Slang (Kölsch)
(Later they changed their style too much into Pop )

The best Rockbands are the classic English/american Bands from the "Golden Age" of Rock Music :
Led Zeppelin (The Nr 1 ! )
Jimi Hendrix
The Doors
Deep Purple
The Who
Cream
Etc etc..

@Sacra Frasca :
Good List of Bands , Specially Sodom are my "heroes" because they Show Metallica that you can still give Speed when you`re old (New Album is KILLER )

CAN- Tago Mago 1972

Surely the best German band ever? But I stand corrected......?
Hey theclearspot,

nice question indeed....
yes there are/were several good Krautrock and Rockbands in germany...
CAN is a good example!

Let me think about some good ones...:

definitely "Eloy" f.e.!!!

as well "Ton Steine Scherben / Neues Glas aus alten Scherben" should be mentioned!

what about "Steppenwolf"...

..."Jane"

... "Epitaph"

..."Birth Control"

..."Guru Guru" (Elektrolurch:)

..."Grobschnitt" !!!

..."Bröselmaschine"

..."Kraan"

-i saw all of them live in concert :D i only missed CAN, Eloy and Rio Reiser from TSS)
Imho those are really good live bands; i think this is one of the biggest advantages of those bands, they all perform well on tape and live!!!

Another young quite actual band i can definitely recommend (okay its not a german band, but at least from a german speaking country) is the swiss band "Ginger".
http://www.gingerspace.com/
They play rather psychedelic guitar-accented sound; i am watching one concert a year from those guys since 2009 or so... highly recommended! :good:

high regards

I think Can were years ahead of their time. My brother saw Can in England '72. He said they were fabulous, all classically trained musicians , a real 'Future' sound. They were hugely influential on 80s British post-punk. PIL (Public Image Limited's first album is all about Can). The Fall even wrote a song called 'I am Damo Suzuki). For us they were the mega cool groups.

I love the story about the band members wandering through the streets of Stuttgart and seeing this lunatic wailing away busking...Damo Suzuki. They thought he would be ideal....so he was in the band...

Can - Mother Sky

while the crowd looks quiet confused, someone in the back seems to enjoy the show:
check out the blonde stoner chick at 4:42 filling a pipe during the show... live in german tv!!

i know "Rockpalast" aired on WDR tv station since 1974.
with loads of good live sets from the ramones to the greatful dead, from bowie to costello and also newer gigs from the festivals in the 90's :)

/€dith: oh, and there was also the "beat club" and "Musikladen" on tv but i think that was even before rockpalast and it was based on single song presentation instead of full gigs like rockpalast did.

I'm marching to a different drummer I'm afraid, but I can't keep myself from posting anyhow.
For me, "Varg" is the best german band today. Their first Album "Blutaar" was just above-average Viking Metal, but it gave a good impression of their talent - for Viking Metal, that means listening to it makes you want to pillage something and swing your axe.

The second Album, "Wolfskult" was a real masterpiece. Listening to it makes me feel like, don't know... something like a vertical tension, a strong will to aspire to being a better me. I'm afraid there are no translations out there for their lyrics - but I think they are just ingenious.
