Best California Orange? Dutch Passion VS Nirvana?

Hello yet again guys n' gals!

I've been wanting to grow out some California Orange Bud for a while now, but since I don't have access to any clones I'm really limited to seeds. No space for a mom or clones either, so all my grows are from seed.

To put it simply, I don't care about the yeild or the potency of the plant, all I'm interested in is that delecious citrusy orange/hashy flavor. I smoked some Cali-O about 6 years ago and have been dreaming of that flavor ever since.

So heres the main problem in finding good Cali-O seeds... I generally can't expect real phenotypic uniformity from Nirvana's products and I just generally don't trust the quality of Dutch Passion's products.
Those companies do however be the only ones offering plain ol' California Orange seeds. I've looked at Flying Dutchmen's Royal Orange and Rez's Orange/Apollo but I really just want some regular old mostly indica Cali-O.

I remember way back in the day there was this huge thread on OG about who had the real original Cali-O line and ultimately it was decided that Nirvana did indeed have the real IBL Cali-O and it was not a cross like many of Nirvana's other strains are. However since then I have heard lots of mixed reports about the flavor of Nirvana's product... lots of variation really. People seem to generally suggest to grow out an entire pack to find a keeper mom. Since I only have space for 2 adult plants at once at one time and no moms or clones I guess I'd just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope I get a decent orange pheno out of the two.

The other option is Dutch Passion... and to be honest, I've heard absolutely nothing about their California Orange. Most of their strains usually get less than enthusiastic reviews though so I tend to be a little bit skeptical of anything from them. But nevertheless, if DP's provided a good consistant orange flavor I'd certainly give them a shot. Like I said, this is all about flavor for me... I have no real cares about the potency or yeild.

So anyway, has anyone here grown out or smoked Nirvana or Dutch Passion Cali-O? I'd really love to hear some opinions on these!

I grew out some Nirvana Cali-O, out of one pack I got 8 Females, and three phenotypes. I don't really remember the grow to well, as it was awhile back. However I can tell you two of the phenotypes gave a very nice fruity taste. I didn't think it tasted like straight orange, more of an orange mixed with a lime? For the price of the beans I'd say it's a worthy investment, even though I can't say anything about Dutch Passion's version.

The only thing I'd worry about if I were you is getting one of the better phenotypes seeing as how you run a micro set up. The third phenotype which was devoid of flavor was also alot more spindly and I had problems with it stretching. This one was a real waste of work, thankfully I only got one of them. Also make sure you get some fresh carbon for this strain, as it can really stink up a room (trimming it the house reeked of marijuana, orange, and some type of spruce tree).

I'm growing some Nirvana Cali-O this fall. I've read that it's decent but not the best Cali-O. Although comparing it to DP's version it may be better.

my last grow, i started 3 packs of nirvana cali-o. due to a security breach though, i felt it was best to trash em. :cuss: i was beginning to sex them when i threw em out.

anyway, i thought the strain was quite stable from what limited time i had with it. all of mine looked the same and had the same orangey smell.

heres some pics of em.

cheers

All those plants and you had to throw them all out. That sucks. Looks like some nice plants too. Also they do look pretty much alike.

They didnt have any problems other than me forgeting about them and not watering. :fsu: But then I made them happy again and this is what I got. 6 Plants 55days Flwr. Avg 1.5oz per plant.. Smoke was great(I'm ALL organic) there were 2 plants I prefered to smoke more if that helps any. If ya got any Q: hit me up.

I have heard real good things about flying dutchman's royal orange. their seedbank is totally underrated because they do not advertise or hype like used car salesman, unlike certain other breeders. so people often overlook their shit.

google "strainguide" and find a back-up of it, there are many.. check out royal orange reports..

I have also heard good things about chimera's calizahr..

i'd go with one of those 2 if I wanted some orange in my garden, seeing as ae77 cut has all but disappeared..

The Ae77 Cali-O is the original and the best but hard to find. If you want that then Chimera is the only one that I know of that used this cut in some crosses. His C+ is (Ae77 Cali-O x DJ Short Blueberry).

I am very interested in finding the best California Orange as well. This is one strain I have always wanted to try but always passed over it.

Does anyone have any experience with High Quality Seeds strain, Original California Orange Skunk. I am guessing that there really isn't much of a skunk smell at all even though it says skunk. My guess is its a sweet skunk or skunk #1 that was used in the cross, but I could be wrong.

Peace!

You will be extremely happy with Nirvana California Orange Bud. The taste and smell are great, and it is a very happy high.

Well I think this settles it as far as I'm concerned! I'm gonna go with the Nirvana Cali-O this time around and hope that I get a nice juicey orangey pheno out of the two plants I'll grow from it.

I downloaded the old OG strainguide archive not too long ago and found some great reviews of Nirvana's California Orange on there too. At this point I feel pretty comfortable choosing Nirvana for this particular strain :)

Hey again! I can't believe that my spaced out ass forgot to thank everyone who posted in this thread for their thoughts on the matter! So a big thanks goes out to everyone here who gave their input on the the tasty orange buds they've smoked and what strains they liked the most.

I thought about the Dutchmen's Royal Orange, but all the descriptions I've read make it sound really sweet tasting when I'm just lookin for a Cali-O that has a really bright orange citrusy flavor mixed in with a earthy hash flavor like I remember from the Cali-O I had way back when. LOL I don't think I'll be able to forget that taste for the rest of my life... I also remember it having a very "up" type sativa high but without ever feeling racey. Also had just a little splash of indica thrown in to make it relaxing without ever feeling couchy. Thats pretty much what I'm hoping for in the Nirvana Cali-O, but the flavor is my main concern.

I'm guessing the Cali-O I experianced was probably from an Ae77 cut, but then again Ae77 was supposed to have a very "orange creme" type taste to it that wasn't really hashy (if my memory serves me right) so maybe it wasn't that. So if after a few grows with two plants at a time I don't find that Cali-O feel that I'm lookin for I might check out Chimera's C-Plus and see if thats a bit closer to what I remember.

But anyway, big thanks to all those who helped me out by posting in this thread! I think I'm starting to like IC better than I liked OG. This place as a nice friendly vibe to it for sure :D
