Best Anit-Virus Software, Free or Not

I'm clueless... My subscription to norton just expired and I also just formatted my program drive so I want a clean start, I got norton 2008 trial version, but it feels clunky and kind of a system hog (at least for my old pos comp). So what are some good options?

I'm running Avast! on the suggestion of a friend who is an IT professional... so far, I like it very much. It updates automatically on a regular schedule, is free, and has a nice intuitive user interface. Thumbs up on that one.

Save yourself some money and get a Mac. I've never spent a cent on anti-virus software, and I never worry about malware of any kind. What's a popup ad? I've heard of them, but never actually seen one. Plus I refuse to give in to those thugs who tell me if I don't pay for their "protection" something bad might happen. It's a racket. Kind of reminds me of this:

thanks all, i installed avast! and I like it so far

tony, I like macs and all, but I also like to play games, so that kind of limits my interest. Also, I think macs are overpriced, I could build a better machine for 2/3 the price.

Me personally? I've never used antivirus, does nothing more than take up a little more RAM and processor power. I've never had a problem, and anything that has popped up was solved within 10 minutes of Googling. I really have no idea how people get so many viruses...

For years i used Kaspersky anti virus with zero issue. Recently after my several year key expired for Kaspersky i switched over to NOD 32 anti-virus, paired with Zonealarm firewall :)

Download AVG anti-virus and also use their anti-spyware. The XP firewall should be sufficient.

I'm an IT professional, I swear by free AVG. If you pay for an AV program you're just paying for the bells and whistles. AVG's virus database is very very comprehensive, I've never had a problem personally nor have I ever heard of someone having a problem who I recommended it to. :rasta:

If you're one to download game and software rips and cracks, stay away from AVG because it's been known to disable programs that aren't at all infected, just made for illicit purposes. It doesn't ask you, it just does it. One reason I don't use AVG, but if you don't do anything like that I'd recommend it if you need an anti virus.

Are you sure it was AVG? *off the record* I do these things and haven't noticed a problem, granted the bulk of my downloading isn't software. Some programs (like cain & abel) will get blocked by pretty much any anti-virus software, just because it's known that they have hostile code.
