best 1" drains???

I am in the process of automating my watering. In this quest i have come across some drains that leak. Obviously i do not like leaks. I think they leak because I over tightened them and now they are stripped. The ones I have are black with a white nut and come with 2 washers. I believe they are sunlight brand. On my last hydro rdwc project I remember that certain brands make better certain parts. Anyone know who makes the best 1" drains? Or have any tips on how to not screw the sunlight ones up? I wonder if i should avoid using the pliers to tighten the nuts?
