Hi Folks,
I'd like the more technically/electronically minded members here to assess this 'purported' new invention:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAND-NEW...arden_Hearing_Cooling_Air&hash=item4ac3ff40ff

Purported to work by;

"BeCoola is a device that removes heat from enclosed spaces and cools the space in which it operates"

Bold claim but how??

"BeCoola operates on 9v Dc & creates a high voltage current that is discharged in very short impulses, through a spark gap and electrostatic emitter"

This is the bit I'd like some advice on - please. To be honest, it sounds like a load of bollocks to me but if the science is viable, he may have built a prototype?

I'm fascinated to know if it's possible but at £400 I'm not taking a 'blind' punt.
Stay safe :tiphat:

BeCoola

Hi Folks,
An update on this 'amazing new discovery'. I emailed the seller/inventor, so I'll post them & his responses.

(ME)
Dear ?,
You say the power usage is lower than portable A/C units etc but you give no idea of performance. No cooling figures or charts to support what is, as you say a new product to market. Do you expect people to take you on trust - with £400? And only one poor photograph, deliberately staged to offer the least amount of information!
Prove it works and post some performance figures and I will consider buying one.
Regards
Iffy

Dear iffy,
Yeah I do expect people to take me on trust I'm not here to rip people off mate ill be banned on eBay within a week if that was the case and say a shoddy picture you have some cheek, it works and it lowers the temperature to the low 20's if you arn't satisfied don't buy one!

- ?

(ME) oh, you get the picture....

Dear ?,
I at no point inferred you were ripping people off, I merely pointed out that there was NO information on performance at all. Apart from the vague comment that it removes heat. Prime example - it's the first time you've stated that it lowers temperature to the low 20's! From what starting temperature? In what size room? How long does it take to lower the temp to the low 20's. Its a simple matter to publish excel graphs showing clearly the performance of the product. If I had invented it, I would have all this information as part of the development. If I wanted to sell large numbers of my new invention, one of the first things I would publish in ANY advert were the performance figures!
I know you don't know me from Adam but I do have some experience of bringing new product to market. The point is, I don't know you from Adam either, so yes you could be another fly-by-night looking for a quick profit before decamping. The more information you give us about your product, the more we will trust it & more importantly YOU!
As I said in my first post, prove it works by publishing some performance figures & I will buy one with pleasure.
Regards
Iffy

So, waiting for his next response. Low 20's is about room temp anyway so no great claim. I will keep this thread updated.
Stay safe & happy growing :tiphat:

BeCoola

Another update on the BeCoola Great New Invention vs Rip Off debate.
Thanks to Shhh for a Google link which threw light on this:

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...vIGwDw&usg=AFQjCNE34z0wRZwqFCV02c8tXUiYvotL6w

So after reading the report and Shhh's excellent summary, I formulated a final email to this guy selling these things on Ebay. I bet he doesn't respond!

Dear ?
So I have done a little research (I like to know what I’m talking about) into your gizmo; BeCoola.
I’m not surprised that you’re very secretive about the performance figures, to say they’re extremely poor would be a compliment! And please clear up a point – which BeCoola unit are you selling here, the Mk2 or the clearly superseded Mk1? Again, you’re unclear in the all-important details or maybe you just don’t know?
I read with interest Professor Saffa Riffat of the University of Nottingham’s findings, where both Mk1 & Mk 2 BeCoola units were tested. It’s funny how you didn’t feature ANY of the graphs, results or findings of the professor’s report in your advert!
Is it because you realise that to begin with, the tests were inherently unrealistic as;
1. They were carried out in a ludicrously small 4.2 x 3 x 2.8m cabinet.
2. They used TWO BeCoola units in the test, to get any real effect & this equates to an £800 purchase to your Ebay customers!
3. Once the small chamber reached the desired test temp – the heat was switched off! In reality, your customers are looking for solutions to constant heat, from grow lamps, IT servers, work stations etc etc. Without the ‘waterfall’ effect of natural heat dissipation & temperature drop to assist it, the unit would struggle to function.
So to summarise: In the test chamber the temperature dropped from 31.2c to 30.0c in the hour without the BeCoola units. Both BeCoola units helped drop the temperature by a further 1.3c in that hour. If I had directed the outlet of a cheap £150 air con unit into that small test chamber, it would have chilled it COLD in about 30 seconds!
So in theory the BeCoola units do reduce temperature in a room that is already cooling! But at what cost?
Against a constant heat source – UNKNOWN!
In a small, already cooling box? - 1.3c in an hour for £800!
Do you really believe that you are offering Ebay customers value for money with this gadget? If you do you’re deluded.
God forbid any poor gardener/small businessmen to invest their hard earned money in this rubbish. With the warm weather approaching, I fear people might look for alternative means of cooling and fall foul of your sharp trading! There will be loads of unhappy people all wanting their money back – will you be around then to stand by your misleading product? I wouldn’t bet my mortgage on it!
Needless to say, I won’t be buying one, in fact I’m going to do my level best to make sure everyone knows what this is all about and the truly appalling value for money your product offers.
I’m on loads of forums so I hope it has an effect.

Lol - I'll post any reply I get :tiphat:
