Battling harsh night time temps...

We live in a very very very cold place.. its -7 here with a wind chill of -15, and at night it gets down to -30 wind chill.. needless to say, basements dont stay all that warm when our light is off early in the morning.. SO we're working on finding some type of space heater that doesn't emit any type of light..

My question is, does anyone have any good effective methods? I was thinking something along the lines of this:

I'm worried about it being oil filled, that it may emit some sort of harmful gas to the plants or something.. My friend mentioned a giant heating pad...

Any suggestions???

Wal- Mart sells small electric heaters with thermostats. Maybe you could position it so there would'nt be any light emitting from it?

That's exactly what I use in the winter up in the rafters. I use 2 per square metre. They cost very little to run, as oil stays hot and is well insulated inside the metal casing ( so no toxic gas gets out = no worries ). Also with temp's like that you might want to consider heating matts or get your pots/system's off the ground floor by an inch or so to allow warm air to the bottom of your pot's/systems, as well as using the oil filled radiators. Hope I make sense I'm rather high at the moment....One love...Stash

I also have my lights on from 6 pm to 6 am. I try to use that heat in the coldest time, no fan blowin thru the light or anything.

The oil filled heaters are excellent for efficiency compared to regular electric heaters. Some manufactures make a low profile version of the oil filled units, so they can be placed on the floor, and not require much head space You don't want any kind of heater near any other objects, including a wall. Another good option is the old polonis ceramic disc heaters. They don't make them outta metal anymore, so the old ones are going for a pretty penny the last time I checked.

Quartz heaters, and others like it will emit light.

Cheers,
SH

Am I the only one that sees the perfect reason to add more light?

Hell - if your going to generate heat electrically - get some more light too!

Ok maybe a heat mat and a light and a heater

anybody else notice how expensive this "Hobby" is? lol

Yes, I will add that I just got done with an indoor and I used an oil filled radiator heater the whole time. 6pm to 6 am lights on and then at 6 am the heater goes on for twelve hours till lights come back on at 6 pm.
It worked really well, to bring my rh down and the temperature up, since it is cold here where I live too. Good luck with the heat

In my experience light causes hermies, thus the quest for a heater that doesn't put off any light... Of course I don't care about light during the light period, but dark period I want it to be darker than dark!!

Thanks for all the good input guys, I went and bought one last night at wal-mart, and damn it works nice!! :D

I have used one very similiar to that for a few years now and it does a great job. The oil is inside and heats up and holds the heat. It gives no smell at all. I live in a cold area and I keep mine on the 500 watt setting at number 2 and it keeps the room 67 degrees. They are very safe because they arent a radiant heater and cant start a fire......

if there is a little light on anything in your grow room just cover it up with some black electical tape or some duct tape...works like a champ!
