is it possible to use batteries to power lighting systems ? like car batteries any help on this would be much appreciated!

Yeah man, you sure can. I use a battery bank, battery charger, and invertor to make sure my fans run when the power is out to keep the stink down. It will also run my entire 400W C13 for a much shorter time and can be charged with my car if the power stays off too long.

it definately wouldn't be practical though. you'd hafta spend a pile but if you're off the grid it might be worth it to ya with flouro's.

They use battery backup systems in large office bldgs in the event of a power outage so yes,you can do basically anything with batteries that you can with AC power. It just has to be converted to AC,you're not going to hook you HID's dirctly to batteries.

You can always use a generator which I guess would be the other way of doing it. Just dont run digital ballasts on a generator. I think everything else is a-ok

whats up with this also u know that battery they say the more u use the more power it gets would that apply for using it with the hid's

whats approx time to charge a car battery more or less

this could be a intresting thing here for small indoor grows charge em a couple of times n have the hids run on that ( lets see if its worth it )

We use car bat to light x-mas lights outside on a tree. 2 batteries daisy chained will last about 4 hours. A 600 hid-probably an hour????

Using batteries is not practical for high powered lights like what we use to grow with. If you have the power to charge them you have the power to run lights. It would be good as a backup to run fans and such as they are much less power hungry. To run anything over a 250 watt HPS, your batteries would be drained so fast it would be useless, and to power them for a long time you would need thousands of dollars of equipment. With todays technology, batteries are not practical for powering HPS or MH lights. Fans, okay, but only for backup. Just my advice, I have did a lot of reading and research on solar power, wind and batteries used with these devices.

First thing first .....
No car batteries they are made for a 5-9% discharge then a FULL 100% re-charge....pull an auto type battery hard and deep (More than a 25% discharge and it will be dead in 30-45 days

that said if you wanna run anything for any length of time you need Trojan L-16's and alot of them. They are $199.99 each
A bank of 22 of them run our house
Also remember you must replace 1.5 units for everyone you use....so if you use 600 watts for 12 hours you must put back 18 hours of charging
600 for 18 hours
1200 for 9 hours
2400 for 4.5 hours
it aint cheap or EZ

One of the magazines (Skunk or Headz I think) did an article about 1-2 years ago on using alternative energy for indoor growing. They came up with the same conclusion, not practical.
