Basic 240 wiring question

Hi guys. My subpanel has a 40 amp 240 curcuit. It currently has one 240 plug attached to it. Since 240 powerstrips are hard to find, can I just run more plugs off this one curcuit assuming that the load of all the devices doesn't exceed my breaker amount? I'd like to run two outlets, one for my lighting controller and one for the ac unit I'm going to use. I'm thinking of asking my electrical guy to pick up some more plug setups at home depot so that I can connect more stuff. It sounds basic, but thanks!

Yeah, you can run more than one plug on a 240 breaker. It's really the same as 120 in that regard, just make sure you don't pull too many amps for your wire and you're fine.

They dont make 240 powerstrips do they?

Go to any hardware store, get some 240 outlets, some outlet boxes and a few feet of romex, a wire stripper [if you dont already have one] and a 240v plug.....

MAKE YOUR OWN!

just count your Amp's and dont forget the 20% rule

I'm slightly worried by the way you've worded some things. What type of receptacle is attached to this 40A circuit? What size wire is terminated to said receptacle?

Make sure everything is actually rated for 40A. The cable coming into the outlet box, the conductors that actually feed the receptacle, and the receptacle itself.

Is it that your sub panel is protected by a 40A breaker in your main panel or this branch circuit your using is protected by a 40A breaker in your sub? Guess I'm a little confused....

I'm just worried that if indeed this is a 240v 40A branch circuit that maybe there is a standard 20 or 15A receptacle attached to it. If you had an actual #8 AWG going to your outlet box connected to a 40A double pole breaker, then you would need to be using a NEMA 6-50R receptacle. Or something along those lines depending on what your appliance plug looked like.

If you have a standard 15A or 20A receptacle hooked up to that circuit, then you've got a real problem.

I'll make a post on the "Growroom electricity and wiring" thread later tonite concerning NEMA receptacle configurations. This is a key thing to get right unless you want a fire. Need to scan some pics so won't post until I do.

Yah we need better info or pics to help...

To answer your original question again, Electricity is not that smart...it only knows how much you draw, not how you draw it. You just need to direct it there SAFELY!!

madpenguin check out the thread in my sig. you should appreciate it!!
