Ballast Caught On Fire

To make a short story short, last week one of my 1000watt took a shit on me so I needed a temp one. My friendhad a few laying around so I bought one for a bill. Today when the lights went on I went in to do my daily check up and I noticed a funny sound by the ballast. Shit caught on fire. I'm not sure what brand it is but stay away from these green ballast

WOW that's messed up...Defently a short inside ...Like it says was the correct voltage used ??? Behind that plate is the 240v plug..was the source voltage 120v??
Magnetic ballast's are easy to repair. you can still save that unit. replace the parts inside the plug for 120v yo will have a new ballast

Yeah it was 120. I just tossed it and bought a new one. Thanks brotha

Not sure but they look like the "coolstar" ballasts from HTGSupply.

I'll say this - you HAVE TO BE SURE that the cord is NOT loose at the plug in point...

I have had cords melt and burn/smoke as a result of not being seated properly. It wasn't the ballast itself that burned...but the result of an improperly seated cord.

Always make sure your connections are fully seated...

Another reason I like to build my own. Everything is hardwired.


May be a bitch to change things around, once in a while, definitely worth it for safety.

lol i had a friend get rid of 4 1000w ballasts.. i took them.. all were brought to him broken.. so i took them... took them apart.. and ended up with 2 working 1000w ballasts for free.. thanks guys lol.. hahah just gota be smart.. and buy the right replacement parts if u need them.. and use good wires n know how to do electrician work !

id guess a loose connection. the transformer is probably fine. its the connections that are shit. hardwire with 12 awg wire to a siemens male plug-done

gotta agree with Dank 100%
FWIW if this problem crops up the replacement socket is available and inexpensive be sure to replace the power cord as well as the socket because both will be damaged in a melt down like that
