Bag sexing ladies?

Hi All,
I'm curious about bag sexing girls-while plants are still in Veg, you put a plastic bag over a branch at 12/12 to tell the plants sex.
Obviously, i've never done it but was thinking about using it on next grow. Time is not on my side right now! My questions are these:

1) What happens to branch once you have determined sex-say female, will it keep Flowering or reverg back to Veg stage?

2) If it revergs back too Veg stage will it affect whole plant( stunt growth for month?)

strangely enough i have never tried this. i usually get a clone early when i top seedlings or manage to sex the plant.

The beans i'm getting are regs and I'm on a tight time frame. Don't want to put extra time and money on a male! I usually get clones or feminized beans.

How about you just put them all in flower...cull your males then up pot females and continue to flower or Yank them quickly as soon as they show and put them back under veg...may slow them down a touch but its no big deal ...the branch thing sounds like a pita.

Someone just E-mailed me and told me that this method puts enormous stress on plant and then you have to wait for it (plant) to reverg back to veg. Told a better way is to plant beans, wait tell you can take clones then flower the mother plant. Probably faster way considering the bag method-you have to wait for plant to Reveg(1 month)back!!
Thought i'd share this info with everyone !!!

I guess it depends...I do it all the time its not a big deal for me...when I take clones it usually takes a bit of time for them to root then a couple weeks to veg...if you pull them as soon as you see the first pistils...throw them under 24 hour light...I have plants that just truck right along like they never saw 12/12.. sometimes they will push a reveg leaf but even then its nothing like a real reveg its like 1 or 2 single blades randomly but then new growth is normal ..I got a bitch now that's a real reveg and yeah its a long slow process with her. After a month just now seeing the first signs of life. And it'll be 4-6 weeks before I clone. But in my experience a plant that had been in flower 10 is a bit different than one that was in just long enough to produce its first pistils..


Do what works for you but for me its just as easy my way and less effort and no ill effects ...but I am maybe just lucky. There is more than one way to skin a cat though and not many things are 100% absolute so much depends on a wide range of variables so go with your gut and do what works best for your needs.

Btw if you take a couple clones...throw the original in flower and lose the clones then what? I say this because that exactly happened to me. I will also note I and hit and miss cloning...which influences sexing method...its that what works best thing for me..there are dozens of factors that can stress or stall growth. Honestly it's usually barely noticeable if at all.

and then what? And then, if you wanna keep that plant... you reveg it.

Cut 25% of the rootmass, repot in a larger container, and leave a little popcorn at the base of the plant. 18/6, water like normal.. a month or so later (maybe sooner) ... plant comes back.

Another option would be to take clones up to 2 weeks into flower. So take off branches that would be larf anyway, and you have a clone.


L to R:
a) My AK47 from Seed at harvest time.
b) My Ak reverting with friends
c) Same AK after about a month after reverting
d) clones of clones of that AK as far as the eye can see

Thats the problem-i don't have time to wait for the Reveg. This is y i was looking at the bag method. Just toss the males and keep the female.

The easiest way to sex seedlings is to wait until they're ready for
their first top, take the tops trim them up like a clone, poke them
through a piece of styro, labled. Put them in a tub with nute solution, plastic
wrap on top. Put them in with your flowering plants. A week to ten days later - all sex revealed.

As others have already suggested, the "low stress" way to find out which of your ladies is a lady would be to take a clone... allow it to root... put the clone under 12/12 lighting... wait til it shows sex.... your plants get about 2 more weeks of veg growth while you wait for sex... and then you know who's male, who's female and you never stressed the plants out by changing their lighting.

Now you can clone the shit out of the females and cull the males.

If a plant has enough of a branch to put in a bag, it should be showing sex. Growing from seed I find that most strains show sex on an 18/6 light cycle by the time they have seven nodes, sometimes at six or even five.

i agree with Green and Gold if it's that size you should be able to tell if it's male or female by looking for pre flowers on the plant close to the base of the branch.female= 2 white hairs in a v shape. may need a magnifying glass or stronger to see but it'll be there. i normally find it to be on the 4th to 5th node.

Thankx Guys-i didn't know that by 4th or 5th node you can see preflowers. I think this is a real advantage for me. Knowledge is power- Going to tell their sex that soon is going to help me bigtime!!!!!!

No -not looking to make seeds just yet. I'm moving in accouple of months. Maybe 4-5! Just enough time to do a last goodbye grow in this home! I like the pre flower way but will i see them sexing at 4th-5th or even 6th node? New home-i'll be able to grow indoors and out!!!!!!!
