Bag-Seed troubles.. (white slime)

Hi,

I got hundreds of bagseed (probly 15 strains..) from a friend about 3 years ago. They are probably around 5 years old.

Now i just found them and decided to germ about 30 or so. I placed them neatly in a wet rag and folded a piece of aluminum foil around it (like a folder).

Its been 3 days and 1 seed has promisingly cracked. The others are not cracking. Instead there is a white milky sticky (like something we all know) liquid comming out of the tips (pointy end) of the seeds. One seed even got weird mold on it which looks like metal dust on a magnet. (in trash now)

The seeds are all dark (ripe) but they are not cracking..

Is there anything i can do about this? or is the batch just a lost cause..

Thanks for any advise..

peace

If your seedlings are ejaculating, that's probably a bad sign. I was never a fan of the paper towel method. Try some peroxide. For the amount of water that it would take to wet 2 paper towels, I would try a capful or 2 of peroxide.

Just add it to water. I love the stuff. It adds oxygen, which means that it creates an unfavorable environment for the bacteria and fungi that attack seedlings.

mrmcbean,
great advice from weedninja suggesting some h202 along with the water. This will help eliminate any bad microbes giving the seeds a more sterile start.
That slime you're talking about just sounds like they were germed in way too wet paper towels and drowned, turning to mush when they popped.

You need to wring out the paper towel so its just well moistened, then place the whole affair into a ziplock bag, but blow a puff of breath into that bag too, then seal it up and put it in a warm place like atop your television set to help the germination along.
