First the government in Western Australia is trying to pass a law to allow police to search people whenever they want without even suspicion of wrongdoing.

Now the Federal Government wants to introduce Chinese style internet filtering/censoring against sites that

"This would include sites containing child sex abuse, bestiality, sexual violence or detailed information about how to use drugs or commit crimes."

This has now gone past the "feasibility" stage and the government is going for it.

Australia really is getting closer to China and not just in business.

Looks like we'll have to supply..."UNDETAILED" information for your reading pleasure. ;)

WTF is wrong with the aussies these days? It used to be "throw another shrimp on the barbie" and "that's not a knife, this is a knife".

Now it's goostepping all over people's rights and iron-curtain style lockdown of information.

Did I miss something and George Orwell took up residence there?

So sad to see what's happened down under.

I couldn't log on to ICMAG about a year ago when they were testing this rancid filter out, fortunately I had already been bought up to speed about how this thing will work, its ISP based, so was pretty easy to sidestep using a proxy. http://anonymouse.org/tos.html worked for me. Medi-useA you are right about our PM. Good little Christian boy who think that his sense of morality is the right sense of morality for us all. not all that long ago Medicinal MJ was on the agenda in NSW but has slowly but surly been buried by the Christian lobby group.when are these people going to realize that for a large section of our society MJ is more than just getting stoned, its a cultural thing .a way of adding meaning and enjoyment to life ,for many including myself it is MEDICINE I'm tired of the persecution.Stoner's in this country really need to get politically organized . I guess that banning ICMAG and other sites like it are one of their ways of attempting to stop this from happening.

Isn't your PM the liberal Kevin Rudd?

From the descriptions and allusions to George Bush I thought you had another big bad Conservative on your hands..

Labour.. But what does it matter? Same hands pulling their strings.

You are correct, it doesn't matter. Politicians are pompous boobs. They supposedly represent us, but spend all their time trying to figure out how to encroach on our liberties. Not many critical thinkers found among the political class - where populism flourishes.

What is the circular theory of politics?

Basically it posits that as politicians lean more in one direction they actually begin to posit ideas of their polar opposite. So very left wing individuals begin to sound like very right wing individuals the more you tend to listen to them. This is really more a result of a lack of difference between the binary individuals than anything else or so I believe.

OK, guys...if this is likely to happen...what about someone starting a thread posting info on ways to circumvent these hazards before they hit us....work out a range of ways and means to stay on ICMag despite the efforts of BigBrother...

I'm not up for it, I do not know enough to give advice...but I would be willing to contribute wh@ I can...

Takers, anyone?

A long time conservative politico here in the states coined the term neo-conservative, or neo-con for short, to describe those types of extremists in the republican party. In light of the last couple of years with republican graft, corruption and child molestation charges, he may have to change that to neo-ex-con! I say fugg a bunch of arrogant, back-biting, duplicitous, hypocrits! No matter what party, no matter what country!

G'day all this was discussed a while ago i will add the link i think there is some useful info in there
I too had problems a while ago, i had notice from my isp that they were trialing an internet filter. On the morning of the trial i couldn't access any pages outside of Oz, they scrapped the trial within a few hours
http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=109379
hope they dont go ahead but if you use Tor it will bypass any such filters
