attic fan thermostats??? *PICS*

I have a basement window that slides half open and is screened in.....tonight i crafted a box around it and used a spare fan i had laying around to make a fresh air intake.......trouble is it's about -10 here right now and it's gonna get too cold in the boom boom room...... i seen an attic fan thermostat at home depot for $30, you just plug it into the wall and plug the fan into the unit..... it has a dial to set hot or cool...... so would this work? anyone know how accurate and or reliable these are???

all depends on the rating of the t-stat. if your fan wattage is under the rated wattage of the stat, then your cool.

Here's a link for a thread started by The Dopest that I think covers the unit you're talking about: http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=45267
I don't use stats like that as I like accuracy. I realize many do not like to order stuff online but Johnson Controls makes an awesome digital stat called an A419. You can find them for about $60 if you search. I had a friend order some. They rock. My outside temps are better @ about 20F and with my setup have no problem maintaining 78F even with an air exchange every 60 seconds. They're SPDT so you can control another piece of equipment on the opposite cycle. I have one toggling between 2 6" Vortex fans. One pulls in cold outside air and the other pulls in warm house air. I have another A419 running a 4" Vortex in the mother room and it toggles between full blast when the room is too hot then flips to a speed controller on the opposite circuit set pretty low to make sure there is always at least some air flowing through.

Hope this helps a little...

You definately need a thermostatic controller. Home depots attic thermostats supposedly work. Home Depot has another one which is a suncourt ductstat--stay away from that one, it wont work.

I think for about 60 bucks you should be able to get a CAP-1 thermostatic controller to control your fans. I bought one and it sure helped!

Home Depot should also have some digital thermostats but they're probably about $50+. The digital A419 is programmable to the degree. Basically for the same price the A419 will kick that CAP-1's ass. Just my opinion. Yeah...you gotta wire up the A419 but no biggie.
