I used to use 3m air conditioner filter sheets, but then i came up with the idea to use used dryer sheets. I use them 2 thick on my pvc piping for my cabs air intakes and they help stop the dust and i change them every few weeks. And they are free.

:woohoo:

Very innovative.... Now I have no excuse, I should filter my intake....
yeah, it helps prevent mold spores from getting in there. Plus if you use a carbon scrubber, it makes it's life last a lot longer as it doesnt get clogged with dust

That is a novel idea you've posted...thank you.
I use filter material on all my cab's, and it really helps keep things cleaner on the inside.

Those dryer sheets won't filter as effectively as the furnace ones, but they should still get the job done.

I've been using the same filter cloth for a couple years now as I can usually clean it out with a vacuum. Not perfect, but it gets it whiter (like it first came).

I might give dryer sheets a go though next round :chin:
Thanks!
JC

Im wondering how much strain that places on your fan.

For mushroom growing projects, where sterility is key, I used Poly-Fil (arts and crafts store) stretched across any intake in the same fashion as the 1st post in this thread. It's cheap and makes an AWESOME pass-thru air filter

I doesn't put any significant strain on your fan.

If anything, running the air through a 1" thick layer of activated carbon would put a little stress on your fan.
Provided your fan is "overpowered", or, has cooling capabilities that surpass what you need (at full speed), using while passing through carbon as well as these pre-filters doesn't put too much stress on your fan.

I have a plastic cup on top of my dryer i stick them in when i take my cloths out of the dryer. I use 2 sheets per load, so they add up quicker then i can use them

Good idea with the dryer sheets man! K+ I'll have to try it out...

The other night I was faced with the question, "What should I filter my intake with?" After a little concentration I just used my girlfriends panty hose =D They work great =P

The panty hose are very durable also. To clean the dust that collects on them I just use a piece of duct tape, about 4 in. long, and it picks everything up easy. It stretches so much to, so you can cut off sections and make a shit load of filters.

Great idea. Only thing I could see being an uh-oh would be is a sheet sucked into your reflector and wrapped around the bulb somehow. Could be a fire thing but the hose clamp looked good and secure. Just don't change them with the light on. Still a good idea. Peace

the intakes are all the way on the bottom, no way it would get sucked all the way into the light, my fan is not that powerful

Cool. I'm thinking about I have dedicated intakes that go straight to my reflectors for a sealed cooling system. All I could picture was the sheet getting pulled through the duct work, into the reflector and wrapping itself around the bulb.
Sorry to add any confusion.
Still a great idea.
Peace

This is a good idea!

I use the super duper 3M filters with a rating of 1000 plus for furnaces cut down to size. If you're gonna filter why not use a real filter... I'd recommend something with a little more air scrubbing power.

When you look at them in a few months and they are disgusting brown, you'll be glad you put them on and that shit is not on your bud. Well, I was.

Not worth the risk. Dry sheets are not going to protect against mold spores pet dander or even pollen. They are for making your clothing soft and fresh or packing into the end of a doob tube.
I use Filtrete Room air conditioner filters.
-electrostatically charged fibers
-captures microscopic allergens like dust and smoke particles
-captures large allergens like mold spores, pet dander and pollen
Lasts about 2 months according to the box but I replace ever month. Keeps me and my plants happer. And the filter sheet is certified by the American Lung Association Health House. Good stuff.
Pricey though.
