is this what it looks like in insulation form?
ive got to crawl through there and fix stuff want to know if i should buy a resperator.



ill try aND GET BETTER PICS IF I GET A POSITIVE.
it looks almost like dirt... but fluffy like fiberglass.

looks like blown in insulation.
not sure if its asbestos.
when was the house built?
really the only time you see asbestos is insulation for old steam heat pipes.
youve have to get it tested to be sure.
i will say this,
that blown in insulation is itchy as shit.
if you get it on you, and you will if you crawl in there, take a COLD shower.
the cold will keep your skin pores closed.
warm water will open your pores and allow the insulation in them.
COLD shower, trust me

That is not asbestos, and yes you need a respirator if you crawl around up there much.

That is more than likely a blown in fiberglass material. The blown in cellulose materials look more like asbestos than fiberglass does, but more for color than texture.
Asbestos will look like a fibrous plaster of paris type material, and was not typically "blown" in.

You're more likely to find asbestos as sheathing underneath the siding on the outside of the house, as opposed to insulation in the attic.

Even if I knew that was JUST fiberglass I'd still wear a respirator. I use one of those fancy 2 canister models. I don't mess around whenever I think I could be exposed to particulates like that. Even perlite is nasty stuff if inhaled.

^^Yep. I've blown and hung a lot of insulation and you will want a respirator.

Im a Joiner and i worked for years in a Company that is specialized on roofs...and no matter if it is asbestos or not...get a resperator.You will thank me for that if you smoke a spliff or pipe after you have your work done...trust me.
