As a Society...We're Doomed. PT. 2

Apparently, I consumed too many cocktails last night and there was some malfunction with my original post.

As non-politically as I can state it. I simply wish folks would read more, watch television less and banish any and all photos out of their lives. Few things are as repulsive than reading "sentences" that consist of "U", "R" AND "UR."

The world would invariably be a better place if people were to read more and expect less of television, pictures or videos. I've not watched television in over 10 years. I prefer a good book over most things in life and thoroughly enjoy videos, under correct circumstances...Just not in a manner that dictates my life or in a way that's dependent on me learning a new task.

End rant...

Absolutely! It doesn't even have to be 100+ years old. Just pick up a copy of anything William Styron, Hunter Thompson or the many others wrote.
Darkness Invisible is outright chilling and Styrons use of words is riveting.

Porn don't do all that for me. I agree, if I were left to my own devices, I'd happily spend my days in a loincloth, talking to animals and swinging from tree to tree, pausing only long enough to smoke a blunt or bong hit. Sadly, I have to portray at least a hint that I'm somewhat domesticated.

I'd be bold enough to say that nearly everyone could be captivated by Literature...It's a simple matter of finding that one Author that reaches you.

Would rather read a well written novel than a film interpretation of it.

I can't think of a better equation of that than Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Anyone that's read the book will/is turned completely off by watching the movie. I can't imagine it possible to capture everything in that book, into a movie. In fact, every Novel/book ever wrote will provide much more enjoyment than the resulting movie.

Catch 22 would be my example , or Lord of the Rings.

If its well written your own imagination is better than Hollywood special effects.

Idiot Box by Incubus

You keep your riches and I'll sew my stitches,
You can't make me think like you, mundane.
I've got a message for all those who think that
They can etch his words inside my brain

TV, what do I need?
Tell me who to believe!
What's the use of autonomy
When a button does it all?

So listen up, glisten up closely, all
Who've seen the fuckin eye ache too,
It's time to step away from cable train
And when we finally see the subtle light,
This quirk in evolution will begin
To let us live and recreate

TV, what do I need?
Tell me who to believe!
Whats the use of autonomy
When a button does it all?
TV, what should I see?
Tell me who should I be?
Lets do our mom a favor and drop
A new god off a wall.

Let me see past the fatuous knocks.
I've gotta rid myself of this idiot box!
Let you see past the feathers and flocks,
And help me plant a bomb in this idiot box!
From the depths of the sea
To the tops of the trees
To the seat of a lazy boy...
Staring at a silver screen!!

TV, what do I need?
Tell me who to believe!
Whats the use of autonomy
When a button does it all?
TV, what should I see?
Tell me who should I be?
Lets do our mom a favor and drop
A new god off a wall.

I think it has gone beyond the point of no return.

When you can have what is going on in your country and have 99.99% of the people more concerned with American Idol.....there is a PROBLEM.

Cops shooting 90+yr old vet's with beanbags cause they don't want to go to the hospital for a surgury they were told was going to kill them....U got problems...

When people riot in the streets over the silliest things...society is fucked.

I'm not even gonna start on your POTUS.....

It's the society they have worked so hard and so long to "create."

Hey, anyone know what time Duck Dynasty comes on?

Funny how people who loath tv seem to be so well aware of the best examples of tv shows worthy of making one loath tv. :)

You have to see it to have a valid opinion of it , same for conspiracy sites.

Do not loathe all television , there is plenty of good stuff like the various David Attenborough wildlife series and the Wire was pretty good , but the signal to noise ratio has definitely got worse over the years.

You just have to be selective rather than channel hop to the least bad.

57 Channels and Nothing on . . .

Not according to the original poster in the original post where he claims he has not watched tv in probably 10 years and yet he's aware of Duck Dynasty as an example of less then quality programming? If he has not watched tv in 10 years then what has he to go on? The fact that you can't turn around without seeing something connected to the show? Duck Dynasty clothing, Duck Dynasty toys, Duck Dynasty pet food, etc.? Does that scream poor programming or does it scream popularity which could mean good programming? What is it that draws people to that show is it the apparently crazy redneck type antics or is it the deep underlying Christian values that nearly got them cancelled until a huge wave of public support flipped things in their favor?

Personally I don't think Duck Dynasty is a great show either but I'm open minded enough to realize that not all programming needs to meet my standards of quality because my standards are not everyone else's standards. I agree with the premise of the thread that as a society we are doomed but I doubt tv is to blame. I do agree that a decline in reading or for that matter a general decline in education is partly to blame. There is far more to it then that though. I can see a steady decline in moral values, family values, and pretty much all of our social ills growing out of the need for both parents to work full time in order for most families to barely have a decent life. Rather then the more 40's and 50's based family model of one parent working and earning enough to support that family while the other stayed home and raised the kids.
