Aroma: Stems and Leaves

I don't know about you but I rub my stems of my plants and leaves. Both give off different smells sometimes. Does the the aroma of the stems and leaves tell you what a strain will taste like? or give you an idea of of being pugnent or sweet?

I noticed different smells from the plant(s). I grew Diamond Head and her stems were very sweet smelling. When I smoked her she ended up being a sweet smoke. My Somango x Lavender mum has a sweet skunky aromas on her stems, and a excotic fruit to her leaves. I heard of growers saying that some Blueberry plants stems smell like blueberries. Do you rub your ladies to see what kind of aromas they are working with? and when you end up smoking her do they resemble the aromas?

I'm quite interested in this.

i believe the stem and buds leaves all smell the same.. just different ammounts of the smell per surface. the buds smell can be quite low sometimes and others its stinky.. but when the stem is rubbed it always gives you a true smell probably the most concentrated, but the aroma coming off a bud or leaf has more surface area than a stem. Basicly ive noticed a plant smells more like its stem its the most concentrated smell. C99 stems smell great :D so do ZDP and Golden Skush and RomP19

My A11 x BlueMoonRocks' stems smell like blueberries heh :D leaves too just not as strong but the buds moreso than the leaves

The stems are strong but it seems to give representation of what the buds are going to smell like. The buds might be more strong or maybe the stem. When I had my Blue Streaks going I remember the leaves smelling of spicy berries but the stems more skunky. The end product was skunky and no berries at all, maybe a slight hint but nothing strong. Those plants had white to light green stems and seemed to lean more towards the kush side of the cross. The male I used had a purple stem and still had the same spicy berry to the leaves. So I wonder if my Som x Lav will give off the fruity skunky smell the stems has on her buds. The leaves smell of ripe mangos :yummy: .

I rub and smell the stems and leaves. I feel it is a good representation of what the buds are going to smell like.

When choosing a male plant to work with I use that as the decisive factor.
I pull a fan leaf from the male and rub the stem of the leaf then smell it immediately to see what aroma and how strong it expresses it.

That technique also works when looking for a keeper mother plant from seed grown plants in veg.

Yuuup. One of the first tests I did on my OG S1s to choose the momma was smell all the stems. The strongest smelling stems in my experiences yield the best tasting/smelling smoke.

My Bubba stems are probably the stinkiest I've ever experienced. I noticed Lifesaver has a smelly stem as well...

Although my C99 and A11 mothers stems dont smell at all...yet I know these strains are top notch in smell and taste so what gives?

Interesting... I just rubbed the stems of my first two plants I'm growing (bagseed) and they don't smell like any weed I've smelled before. I can't really describe it, because I'm a little stuffed up so I'm unsure. I look forward to the end product!

i always smell the stems and leaves, i also like to give the little nuggets a slight pinch to smell the odor.

another thing i've noticed is when a bud is dry but still has that chloraphyll/green smell if you give it a little pinch and smell it that is the same smell that comes out in the cure.

Yup, that's how I know when my buds are fully cured!

That's what I mean. Some strains it may not smell at all and still be good. I think the aroma factor gives you an idea on what your nugs are going to smell like, not the potency. Although stinky plants are usually potent. I think it can tell you if your strain is going to be a low odor strain and low odor bud. Some bud is good but it's aroma isn't that strong, while other will smack you in the face when you open the jar. I still find this to be an interesting subject. Keep the thoughts coming.

Yes indeed! I always shake the branches and give them a flick while they are flowering to get some aromas flowing.

I also love smelling my plants in veg. The smell is different than the finished product, but that is probably what nepthaze said about the surface area.

The aromatic terpenes start developing on the plant when it is quite young I think.
