first all the orange hairs will be brown, then you want to see trichomes with large bulbous heads.. when some of these start turning an amber or orangish color you will know the time is near and can start harvesting whenever you feel is good.

this is what I do I wait till about 50% of hairs are brown or red some strains will stay red and not turn brown and some strains will turn brown right away. Also if you are watching your tichromes here is the break down clear trichromes are sign of not ready and plant is not done with flowering, milky white is when your plant is at it's strongest THC level but can let go a little longer Bud's can get thicker but not taller, milky white with a touch of amber is when I flush my plants THC is still strong and plant will be done growing and flowering and a good high, the part about trichromes getting bigger bulbs to them that has a lot to do with the strain you are growing indicas have bigger bulb'es trichromes and Sativas have wisky like trichromes and never real get big Bulbs to them unless you have a hybrid and that is a different story all together.

Id have to disagree about sativas.. they obviously have trichomes with really large heads when matured and grown correctly.. wisky like? do you mean wispy? either way where do you get this information? ever held a microscope up to a trainwreck or white widow nug?

hmmm, depends on the strain. you might see it run on with new pistil formation and elongated colas. they may just tighten up and finish faster than 3 weeks. just be sure to listen to the thing about the trichomes becoming bulbous on top and turning cloudy/milky white. a little amber in the trichomes is good also. look good tho and good luck

The best way to tell when your plant is ready to harvest is looking at the trichomes under a microscope. You can buy a cheap microscope that works really well for this off of e-bay or at Radio Shack for somewhere in the area of 15 to 20 dollars.

Watching the hairs and all the other ways ,other than looking at the trichomes, are a good way to mess up your harvest.

I harvest when I have about 20% amber trichomes. Some people like the trichomes to be a little more or less amber depending on how they prefer their bud.

Hope they dont smell too much.Do you know what strain they are?
Good luck with your plants.
