Aquafina's secret

PepsiCo Inc. will spell out that its Aquafina bottled water is made with tap water, a concession to the growing environmental and political opposition to the bottled water industry.

According to Corporate Accountability International, a U.S. watchdog group, the world's No. 2 beverage company will include the words "Public Water Source" on Aquafina labels.

"If this helps clarify the fact that the water originates from public sources, then it's a reasonable thing to do," said Michelle Naughton, a PepsiCo North America spokeswoman.

Pepsi's Aquafina and Coca-Cola Co.'s Dasani are both made from purified water sourced from public reservoirs, as opposed to Danone's Evian or Nestlé's Poland Spring, shipped from locations the companies say have notably clean water.

Critics charge the bottled water industry adds plastic to landfills and uses too much energy by producing and shipping bottles.

But industry observers said such opposition is unlikely to drain U.S. sales of bottled water, which reached 2.6 billion cases in 2006, according to Beverage Digest. The industry newsletter estimated U.S. consumers spent about $15-billion (U.S.) on bottled water last year. PEP (NYSE) fell $1.48 to $66.84.

Wow! What a surprise, it is actually tap water. Ya know, that really amazes me...I never thought paying $1.20 for water in a plastic bottle was worth it. Doesn't seem like the smartest way to get your money's worth. :jerkit:

I never, never use bottled water. It tends to dilute the tequila in my bloodstream!

Just curious Dr. Diamonds, what brand of bottled water do you drink? And what is the difference in the taste between it and Aquafina or Dasani?

I go to Lowe's (the hardware store) and pick up a 24 pack of bottled water for 4 bucks.

It tastes good to me, so I'm not complaining

I only drink bottled water if I'm in my car or something, away from a tap source. I refuse to buy bottled water if I have tap water and a fridge/freezer.

Penn and Teller once did a test on Bullshit where they randomly sampled people on the streets of NYC to see which people liked better -- the 'famously bad' NYC tap water or bottled water. They poured them both into cups and asked people to tell them which one tasted better. It was something like 90%+ of people they polled said they liked tap water best. But almost all of them said they drank bottled water almost exclusively because they thought NYC water was nasty. They were all fucking shocked to learn they actually liked NYC tap water more than bottled water.

its not just straight tap water.. its purified like crazy. they get particle content down to like 1 part in 1 billionth of water. other bottled waters are in the millionths.

bottled water actually had less restrictions on it than tap water. tell that to philly. water has so much metal in it, even danzig would be disgusted.

H2O is H20 in the end.

I prefer Aquafina over Dasani.... Dasani seems to dry my mouth out or something weird. Or maybe I'm just crazy. But yeah... water's water. The only time I get bottled water anyway is when I'm out and about. It's just a dollar...

Bottled SPRING water is usually the good stuff, gotta look where it comes from. I buy nice Canadian spring water at the dollar store, drink a case a week for my health and use it on my clones and seedlings also. I don't care for the spring water west of the rockies though, it might be ok, but it ain't as good.

This is old news, but like many things, folks do not pay attention, and read the labels. No plastic water for me thanks.

I've always noticed those 2 brands specifically taste strange. Especially Dasani, it's such crap.. it tastes sorta metallic to me. And I know exactly what you're saying about drying your mouth out, Holdin', it just tastes weird. On the bottle I think it says "enhanced with minerals to improve taste" or some nonsense. It just gives it an aftertaste for me.. gross. I wonder where this mystery tap water is coming from...?

I like spring water, like zephyrhills or fiji. To me, those taste clean, no mineral aftertaste or whatever...just straight up clean water.

In an Environmental Science class I took a couple years ago, we did a similar experiment with different water sources. People brought in tap water from their houses in different cities, varying brands of bottled water, we also went outside and got some water from the lake/pond on campus. We tested the pH, bacteria levels.. and a couple of other things I forgot, but for the most part the tap water had a more suitable pH and was cleaner or just as clean as the bottled..

the metalic taste is either a ground water taste or something like copper sulphate which leaches out of the piping.... I'd suspect dasani comes from a spring somewhere but perhaps not a mountain spring....could be the location is high in minerals...

ha turns out is was discovered in 2004 that Dasini comes from a tap "In Britain it's launched the "Dasani" brand of water which, despite its fancy title, doesn't come from a hole in the ground in Italy, but from a water pipe at Coca-Cola's factory at Sidcup in the north east of England."

the big news here was that a well known "soda drink" company pays about $1.80 for enough water to make $600,000.00 worth of soda. And in the mean time people are resticted on what water they can use and how much. The stores are full of soda contaminated water that cost less than $2 for hundreds of thousands of bottles but no water for my home.

not a bad margin at my expense

Cmon people, just buy a Brita filter!

And for the record, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Dasani tasted kinda weird for water. I hate Dasani.

:D

I only drank bottled water when I was exiled to a certain central Texas town with its famous fertilizer-flavored water. Since I'm now back in the civilized world, tap water is more than sufficient.

dasani tastes gross, it tastes like bad tap water.

the water you get from your grocery store, the 18 l bottles you fill are just tap water but it gets filtered by a big ass filter and ozonated so it's a bit different than your tap water.

Evian and other water that comes from glaciers or natural spring water taste way better than the filtered tap water.

Evian is actually good, it's good because it has no taste just tastes like ice cold water dasani tastes like toilet water.

also aquafina or desani did not really trick or lie to anyone.

I don't remember seeing the bottle mention it's spring water or glacier water so you should have already known it was just filtered tap water they weren't lying about anything.
