Anyone with Jiffy Peat Pot experience?

Hello outdoor growers, this is round two for me and I unfortunately do not have the ability to start seeds indoors under lights. This year I have the only only option of starting them outside, so I am looking for a convenient way to start my girls(Frisian Dew:)). I have been looking around and found these Jiffy peat pots. They are the ones that require water and they expand and have the dome which is an added benefit form what I have read for the germination process. I was just wondering if anyone has used these before and how they worked out and the best way to use them. Thanks for any comments! Goodluck 2012! :tiphat:

Hey Grow 4 me, I use those with success.

I usually start my valuable seeds out in a moist paper towels then transfer them to those jiffy pots, use them for clones also and they work great and have never given me much, if any issue at all.

For veggies or even watermelons, beans, cucumbers, artichokes etc. they are also awesome.

I've got a few full racks of artichokes and heirloom tomatoes going with a decent rate of success (I germinate other seeds much more carefully than common ones ;) )

There are usually large racks of those jiffy pots (think its maybe 80+, not sure at the moment Id have to look) available at hardware/garden stores around the beginning of spring every year so thats when I stock.
I usually don't see them in the stores in Fall/Winter.

Hope this helps,
Good Luck

O as far as they work you've pretty much got it, add water and let them do their thing. Pop your seeds or sprouts in once they are nice and moist and let them take their course.

I also like the dome because of cats/dogs/chickens.

If I've got them under cfls in the shed it keeps the pesky cats out but if I just lay them out by the garden It'll keep the dogs from bothering them and chickens (free range) from eating the sprouts.

If you do them outside I usually secure the lid with a couple pieces of duct tape incase it's windy out or there's other persistent critters arounds

Beware of the acidity of peat pots! You can test this out by measuring the ph of the water you are going to use to soak/expand the jiffy pots with, then soak the pots until expanded, wait 10 minutes, then squeeze out enough water from an expanded pellet to ph test it--I use the liquid ph test drops. You'll likely find that the ph reading is much more acidic than the water you soaked them in.

The best way I've found to propagate in peat pots is to fill a 5 gallon bucket with regular water [neutral ph], soak the pellets for a few minutes, then squeeze out the water. I repeat this process until the water squeezed out of the pellets registers a more appropriate ph [6.5 for most applications]

im glad to here that they are successful. There are pretty cheap and I plan to do a quick a quick trial run with some bagseeds I got from a friend that I have in paper towels right now. Thanks for the help!
