Anyone use a Rasberry Pi or Arduino?

I've had the idea of getting a Raspberry Pi for my pc tower to relay its stats back to me. There all kind of modules you can get for them, more than i can list. I really wanted it to monitor different sections of me pc heat, i do some over-clocking and the information would be nice to just have on hand.

While researching how i wanted to setup my grow are, it hit me..... :hotbounce why not us a Raspberry Pi to monitor the heat and humidity of my grow area? It is capable of doing way more than just that, pending you know how to program it. I was thinking about putting a 3-5" display on it, and just getting a small (large TV remote size) keyboard/ mouse combo to control it.

I realize there are pieces that will already give me such stats, but I would like to imagine that with the proper knowledge someone could do way more than just temp and humidity sensors. Possibility of a complete automated system, cheap, depending what modules you need to complete it. i did a general Raspberry search here and got zero results.

Any ideas, or link to somebodies else "I got it" moment?

Here is 2 ideas for you:

There is a search link on top right of this page just for you https://www.icmag.com/ic/search.php?

Thanks for pointing out the more in depth search, i did just do a general search. In regards to your Ras Pi query, I don't exactly understand what your trying to point me at. If your not being sarcastic, a bit of explanation would be nice. I don't own a Ras Pi just have the idea and have done general research regarding applying it to my computer, not a grow environment.

Also I don't want to hook it up to a network, so
I' not sure why i would want to use secure shell. There would be no information that i would be sending in need of encryption. I would just use it as the primary pc/controller.

Pointers?

It would be cool... I would want it on a network, but that is just me. In addition to temp and humidity, I would want a power fail/failed indication, and some indication that the lights were on or off. I use fluoro and DIY LEDs, so I would need maybe 10 signals for that purpose. Cheers!

So i did a bit of searching within the RasPi community and was able to find a few ideas pertaining to growing plants and found....

Automated Aeroponics
http://www.instructables.com/id/Automated-Aeroponics-System-Using-Raspberry-Pi/

An open source automation system for hydroponics
http://yieldbuddy.com This link does also provide a way to track lights on/off and in general more info than the 1st link.

I also found a few post from other forums, but those are easily obtained from a google search. At some point I'd like to run something like this, but till then i hope this info can spark some ideas for someone ( cause i want to read that thread :dance013: ) Untill then, just remember the box is to small to think within.

Ah, I was going to suggest checking out instructables.com but you know about it already. I was interested in this but I know I don't have the technical expertise. Still interesting to read about other people's projects though.

I'm just getting used to Python on the Pi but am planning to build a simple system to monitor and record temp + humidity, record video on a timelapse (why not?) and record if the lights have gone on/off on time with SMS alerts if things fail. There's also a humidity sensor for the soil so could feasibly also record that and eventually use it to automate the watering.

I know there are several arduino projects doing the same but Pi is the direction I'm heading which means it'll take a lot of borrowing code, experiments, and an initially ugly GUI, but it shouldn't be too hard to get working. If there's interest I'll post my results on here(not gonna be for a while!).
