Anyone running Metal Halides?

Sometimes they go BOOM!

If you don't have a lens or a shield a bad thing can get much worse! The picture shows a 1000Watt Agrosun Gold MH that blew up on startup just the other morning. The bulb was in a hydrofarm air-cooled hood with a lens and the lens contained everything. Just a word of caution for those who may not know.

I think it was a little over a year old but it may have been older. I just don't remember and I didn't write it down. I'll write the install date on the housing this time. I got lazy and didn't order a new one as I should have.

That sucks, you got a spare one laying around or you in the dark?

I had a spare hanging around, so I just had the replacement sent by ground instead of next day air. The new bulbs (note use of plural) should be here tomorrow.

Your right about bad to worse Buzz, If that were to blow up in ones face without a lens or shield that could be dreadful. As dreadful as having to order a Seeing Eye Dog. Thanks for the safety reminder. :nono:

Hi Buzz

That sucks. I wonder the underlying causes of bulb explosions... I mean, there are literally hundreds of thousands of MH bulbs being ran across the country in many, many retail stores, yet never hear about an explosion.... just think Costco...

It is a characteristic of Metal Halide bulbs to fail on occasion. I'm sure the bulbs in Costco are shielded either by a protective shroud or a lens. Here's a pdf file that gives some interesting info.

holy shit I hope that doesn't happen to me. I run halides. Now Im scared to go in my growroom!!! But for the greater good it must be done! :D

Don't you think that could happen with a HPS bulb as well?

I've been through well over a thousand if not two MH bulbs in my life. I've never had them blow. It may be the brand. I've also broke too many to count.

You absolutely do not want to break a HPS tho. Talk about BOOM!!! Like a shotgun!

Using a MH for a year? That is growing with 60% lumens compared to what a new one puts out. I use them for 2 crops then off to the dump. I can really see the dif with a new bulb.

Should there be concerns about mercury contamination if a MH (or any other HID) bulb blows up?
