Anyone run UV-C sterilizers to control odors?

There's a really cool thread about one of the setups available at Lowes for $129. Rather than jack that thread, I figured I'd ask if anyone out here is running one of these setups and how it's working.

Ebay has several of different models listed, from fancy units to bare bones, bulbs. Alot of the bulb setups just plug right into your duct work. I've seen them as high as 72 watts.

Are these new? Why aren't people going nuts for these? They don't create ozone either.

well i dont see how it differs from an ozone generator that uses a bulb to convert o2 to o3.its the same principle.uv light that coverts o2 into 03 and also kills germs.uvonair makes em ,too.there not marketed as air purifiers just ozone generators. There both using uv bulbs to destroy odor.since there uv they also destroy germs as well.

the unit your looking at in the thread has a small fan for intake and draws the air up and through the uv light and out the top.what i noticed is that the oxiadation of the incoming air smells mettalically after awhile cause the bulb heats up or wears down quick-at least in the uvonairs.the air tiger uses the same principle-uv light to create ozone.hope this helps.

Hey rr14 & eyes,

Thanks rr14 for the consideration.

The info with the GermGuardian claims it is of a spectrum that DOES NOT CREATE OZONE.
(from the web site>"Why doesn't the Germ Guardian emit ozone?
The type of UV-C bulb used in the Germ Guardian is a special one that does not emit ozone out of the product. " kinda weak...'OUT OF THE PRODUCT' being the operative stressed)

Also UV-C is the spectrum that kills germs by destroying their DNA and claims to "break down organic compounds at a molecular level.

Just for grins here the links from the GermGuardian thread if anyone wants to read the links included in the first post.

Also rr14, the info I found claims that UV-C has been used to sterilize things (air& surgical instruments) since the very early 1900's , so I think that would be a no to them being new.

>"(Is this new technology?
No. UV-C has been used to kill germs for almost 100 years. The first usage was in France in 1909 to disinfect their water system. This technology is still used today in hospitals, commercial buildings and custom homes to kill germs.)"

They (UV-C lights) are used BIG time industrally to purify air and water on very large scale. I think we are just seeing the first that are packaged for the home consumer in a nice neat package.
They recomend replacing the bulb/filter assy once per year.

I think other people WILL be very intrested in this new size/packaging/marketing combo.
As for the GermGuardian is is just a thing of beauty with the whole package so neat and transportable.

I don't really know how to measure it, but it cleared up the trace smell I had near the front door really well. I am making a combo Humidity/speed controller for my room exhaust fan and it is disconnected. The light exhaust is pluged into the 12/12 timer so I get a (temporary) smell leak and high humidity issue at "night"(day). I better get off my ass and rig the humidity/speeder cause I'm in 3+ weeks 12/12 and things are bustin loose!!!
(lazy ass pot head! :joint:)

I bought a second one and have that one in my bedroom running full force to cut the smoke down " so I can see across the room" ha ha ha

They are not magical, but I get so tired of building charcoal filters.
Best to use everything you have since smell is usually the biggest problem if you are pretty stealth otherwise. :yoinks:
