the cost hasnt changed. same planes, same instructors, same test, same FAA admins. gas is probably a little more expensive tho

he learned to fly by reading the planes manuals, watching an instructional DVD and by playing flight simulator games, however his landings were less than perfect although he walked away from each.......

look into flying clubs where they have co-op ownership of the planes and many times
older pilots will "teach" you for free. no drug testing when I did it 10 years back.
prices will be much less overall if you get your instruction someplace rural.
I had some lessons in LA and they were very expensive but exciting as hell because the best
places for emergency landings were usually warehouse roofs or a freeway.

if you live in southern cali I would learn to fly gliders at torrey pines 1st or hang gliding up in santa barbara. much cheaper way of learning to fly and more fun IME.

An airplane that cost $5000 in the late 70's will cost $30,000 now. Same airplane, just 30 or 40 years older. Avgas is a lot more expensive.

Properly done, flying is highly boring. You don't want the exciting times.

Dirt bikes are more fun. bg

right by otay lake they /fly teach those little motorized glider things . they are always buzzing about when i am fishing lol. did the dirt bike thing as a kid. no interestin hang gliding but fun to watch at torrey, nude beach LOL. no interest there either. i want a regular pilot liscense. then i would consider moving back to maine. small float plane would be nice. lots of rural lakes and land. maybe in like 10years.i would like to go back into being a guide. then i could fly in customers. .and i know a few peeps up there .i could fly in some of their customers too. just dreaming . but its possible.40 to 60k minimum for plane last i checked.first i want the liscense. thanks for the input guys

you really should download or buy Microsoft Flight Simulator. It's not really a game. It's pretty complex and you can learn A LOT about real planes, procedures, and flying. You can even by a yolk, pedals, etc to go with it. I recommend doing this and excelling at it before going for your private license.

I like the float planes, touchdowns, takeoffs, landings and stuff but flying is generally boring unless you have an aerobatic plane like the Extra 300 which you would need aerobatic training for. I want to lease one of these one day but I bet insurance is real expensive.

Bout the closest thing to a jet for private pilots license. You can't really do none of that stuff in a Cessna.

if you are serious:
take an intro flight at a flight school and make sure the pilot demos slow flight and stalls for you. he probably wont want to...
many people won't want to fly in a small plane after that, it makes many people
quite sick.
1. pass physical exam, this is almost impossible without lots of lying...talk to pilots in your
area for the best docs to shop. the gov has made it really hard to pass, all pilots cheat now.
you basically need to claim perfect heath your whole life and NO prescription
or recreational drug use in most cases. admitting to snoring is enough to lose your ticket these days. (sleep apnia)
pretty much everybody in america has used some prescription drug that is forbidden now...since 9-11 they are making it really ugly.
most will not pass i fear these days... it's political now but private
pilots are mostly 1% kind of rich guys and they have a huge lobby in congress.

2. go to ground school and pass exam.

3. start your flying instruction after you have passed the test on the book learning.
this will save you a fortune.

float planes take an additional certification, doing anything in a plane that you charge
money for ie commercial.... that's going to cost you big time.

purchasing a plane is just the start, the real trick is affording the insurance and passing the
annual inspection process. this is also where you need friends to help you cheat.
those kind of friends are way harder to find than good connects in the weed world.
it can be done, though and it was fun when i had the money.

now i ride my dirtbike...

this is a floaplane you can fly legally with no license:
part 103 ultra light regulations.
my buddy had one of these fuckers and after he got off the ground
it would out climb anything. wings and tail fold back for storage.

fly around humbolt and sniff out grows...

this is an article on building one to pass the weight regulations.
in practice one self certifies the weight requirements.
the FAA only weighs an airplane after they pick up the pieces
in a crash in most cases...

Ultralight are a much cheaper way to get into flying if you have the bug but they are basically extinct now...

most people don't buy planes unless their rich or some old ass plane and knows a good mechanic. You can easily rent a plane by the hour whenever you want to fly. Could also lease one yourself or with a partner or two.
