How old are you talking before saying the are old an crusty? LolBonsai mums are cool, and I keep them a few weeks in 16 oz cups,
take cuts and flip after cuts are rooted.
I used to tend Bonsai mums in veg for months,
but found maintenance better with younger mums vs old crusty mums.
That's a flowering plant not a mother plant for taking clones
I took many clones off her. Then decided to make some seeds. That's a flowering plant not a mother plant for taking clones

I've had moms for 3+ years that would still have 95%+ clone rates while still being manageable growth wise
Sounds like a nice room. Did you hunt your Skunk 1 from Sensi stock? I picked up a pack and hope to find something good. Only problem is I have no clue is I ever had real Skunk 1.In my experience, it is possible to keep bonsai mothers but always depending on the genetics. There are some that become lignified very quickly and it is difficult to take cuttings, having to renew it from time to time. Still I kept a Deep Chunk mother for over a year and a Skunk 1/Neville's haze x Uzbeka cross for almost 7 years.
There's just certain genetics that you'll never get back, like my real original "thin mint" gsc I cry every time I think about the day I lost her during a move. None of the forum cuts or new "cookies" come close. There were mums in my veg cab for close to a year, what I call crusty.
I held a T haze for almost ten years, cuts of cuts, before she got the chop,
now hold some S1 and various seeds of her crosses.
In my opinion, if you keep the same mum for years, more power to you.
I rotate mums to explore the variations available to me in my small grow.
