Anyone cough mucous (sp?) up?

G

Guest

I've been smoking for nearly 7 seven years numerous times a day with the occasional couple day break.

Anyways, I haven't smoked for nearly a week now and I've been coughing up all this nasty yellow mucous. It's really gross, but I'm glad it's going out instead of staying in.

I'm pretty certain that I'm getting this from smoking.

Anyone experience something similar to this?

yep, when you stop smoking after smokin for a looonngg time, you will start hacking up big amounts of mucous, compared to when you were smoking

it's weird.

Yes. I've been smoking for 20 years.
Same result. If you keep on smoking, you can' t clean yourself
Stop smoking tobaco 1 year ago.
Now only vaping ganja. A little bit better for my lung.
Less sinus problem too.
Be well

Well, your lungs are getting the same treatment as the inside of your bowl. Unfortunately you can't just simply swish some rubbing alcohol/sea salt in your lungs to clean them out.

The lungs are trying to get rid of the material you're putting into them.

Pretty simple :p

It's your bodys attempt at clearing out your upper respiratory system. I reccomend switching to a vaporizer

when you smoke, you kill the cilia lining your bronchial tubes (little hairs that actually move in wavelike pulses which act to sweep mucous and debris up and out of your bronchial tubes)

when you quit smoking, your cilia is able to live/repair/regrow once again
once that happens, the debris in your lungs and tubes is able to be swept up and out once again. this is why when you stop smokin after a long time, your lungs "clean out" and you start hackin up large amounts of mucuous and crap.

it's a great thing that cilia are able to regrow
it's amazing just how much we can abuse our lungs and still function semi-normally, when ya think about how much nasty shit goes into your lungs from smokin (think about how little it takes to dirty up your bowl!)

I was under the impression (actually remembering a 7th grade class here...) that the cilia is actually paralyzed and not killed and they are un-paralyzed a week or 2 after stopping smoking.

Of course, this was from a 7th grade teacher...

There's lots of info saying that cigarette smoke kills cilia. A lot of it says tar kills the cilia. Tar contains a huge amount of chemicals, which can be the cause of cilia death.

Not much is available on MJ I can find.

I can imagine though that the smoke from MJ would either inhibit or kill cilia in the same fashion.

Regardless, when you smoke, the cilia either die or are inhibited from working correctly, so the end affects are the same anyways. Luckily, cilia can regrow.

i dont know whats wrong with you guys but marijuana is a I forget the word at the moment. but basically it makes you cough. So you should be coughing up mucus everytime you smoke anyway. its good for you. But since you say you are coughing up yellow mucus i would say you have a respiratory infection. lay off the smoking for a while at least till you heal up. The only time i ever cough up anything other than clear mucus is when im sick or have been smoking cigs a lot.

I think you're thinking of the word 'expectorant' or something like that

Regardless, when you smoke, resin lines your lungs and tubes. This accumulates, and in the process, your cilia are inhibited or die.

So this layer accumulates, but at the same time, additional mucous is formed, as an immediate response to aggravation of the lungs/bronchial tubes.

So, you occasionally cough up some mucus here and there.

But, even though you cough up mucous, you still have an accumulating layer of resin on your tubes that is not coughed up with the immediate mucous.

Once you stop smoking, your cilia regain their function, or regrow, and that base layer of resin is purged from your tubes by the cilia, because the rate of resin accumulation is now less than your body's rate of purging it, resulting in nasty yellow/black crap you never generally cough up while you're smokin.

That's the way I think of it, at least.

And I've never heard of MJ bein an expectorant but that's just me, so I dnno

wonder how vapin effects the cilia ?

From what I've seen, most often, vaping doesn't eliminate all of the biproducts of a combustion reaction, but it certainly reduces them by a large amount. So the cilia are still gonna be affected negatively, but way less than smokin', for sure!
