Anyone a carpenter?

I am looking to earn some benjamins ($$$) and recently talked to a guy who was a carpeneter. He gave me his card and gave me the number to his boss.

Anyone do this type of work?

I think I may be into this. My whole life I have tried desk job type work, or barista/service type work, and always have just hated it. I am a very physical person, but am very smart...and good with hands on type stuff.

What can I expect?

what type of "carpenter" there's all kinds...that will help peeps tell ya what to expect.

hangin drywall is different than roofing is different than pouring concrete is different than exterior trim.....etc...

I've done all the above, and always loved it...money is usually decent too. some work can be seasonal.

your best bet if your going into construction and u like it is to learn a trade really well, and get the necessary tools to be able to set out on your own and become a "sub-contractor" - so you'll work for yourself.

in construction..thats where the money is

Expect splinters :) i did a few days monkey work for a carpenter i know, putting up a fence for a patio and its certainly more rewarding than serving people, to have something finished in front of you and to know you did a good job is far more satisfying than dealing with Joe Public.

forget it, not worth the risks man. i know so many people in construction who are now disabled for life.

Well, the company I may apply for a job with... on the business card it says "Quality Finish Work" So what does this mean? I'm seriously a complete newb when it comes to this stuff. I was raised white-collar...fed white-collar... shit white-collar... But this sounds actually way more interesting! I'm not a desk person. I have TRIED!

quality finish work

quality finish work

This company will specialise in applying baseboard, crown mouldings , door hanging and general finishing trim work.Compound Mitre chop saws and pneumatic finishing staplers and nailers and routers will be your tools of the trade.A decent trade to get into because the work is usually light and you will be working mostly indoors after the home or business is already buttoned up(ie, roof on and possibly already heated)Then again maybe they could be siding and facia installers as well....Good luck man

finish is the best to get into as far as work availability, I don't know where you live, but framers are often out of work in the winter months, finish work is indoor and all year long. It's a very good skill to have.
HippyNextDoor is right, it'll be mostly the "finsh" work like baseboards, crown moulding, door and window trim. It could also include built-in cabnetry, wood flooring, waiscoting, or even fireplace surrounds.

To start you'll probably start doing the grunt work, like unloading/re-loading the truck, and shit you can't screw up like baseboards. The thing about finish carpentry is that it's the part of the construction that the owner will see the most. Therefore it will be importaint the it is done RIGHT, you cant really cut corners with this stuff.
