I have a 4" Vortex fan hooked to a cooled hood, vented to outside the cab. The fan sucks fresh air into the cab at the same time it is cooling the hood.

Since you just bought, and if you can afford it, i would take it back and get a 6" stick a carbon filter rated for the same flow as your fan on the end, with no ducting less than 6" apart from 4" fresh air intake going into the cab, this will make sure you have no air leaks. You will then, have something with less noise, more efficient cooling and no smell. If you do this you won't regret it :rasta:

This is one set up I currently have going.

The hood is 8" sealed air cooled w/ an 8" inline

the exhaust is 6" with a profilter 50

the intake is 4"

This set up was put together with expansion in mind. I can easily run 2 hoods off of these fans.

As for making it quieter, isolate the fan's vibrations with a bungee cord. You can get duct mufflers and wrap the fans with insulation if it is still too loud.

I agree. My cab with the 1k light is 4' x 5' x 7'. I used the 4" Vortex because I had it. If I had had to buy a new fan for that cab, I'd have got a 6". A 6" doesn't cost that much more and actually fits better because you don't have the 4" -> 6" adapter to deal with. Although the 4" fan is cooling the 1k hps, and venting the cab, quite nicely, this is the first time I've flowered in this cab and, when the time comes to add a carbon filter, I may find that I need a bigger fan. All my ducting is 6", with the adapter attached directly to the fan, so it would be a snap to put a larger fan in and wouldn't require any other modifications.

I have several Vortex brand fans and none of them are real loud, but nor are they very quiet - actually the noise is quite annoying, now that I think about it. I just finished building a veg cab for a guy and I used his 6" vortex type fan. I don't remember the brand of his fan, but was it ever quiet. I hooked up his ventilation exactly the same as I do in all my cabs, but when you turned his lights & fan on you couldn't hear a thing.

...I've got to remember to call him in the morning and find out the brand of his fan. I'll post the brand name here when I know it.

The Elicent fans are a little more pricey than the Votec fans, but they seem to be much quieter. Actually my fan that I am using now is an Elicent 200B and it has been running for over 1 year non-stop on full power. Before this grow it was used for about seven years off and on, one time for over a period of 2 years non-stop use. It is still running like new - I don't think you can kil these fans. When I buy I always use Elicent. LOL! This sounds like a commercial!
