Any succes with putting trash bags in dirt?

I have a feeling my title didn't quite explain what I'm trying to do. I want to dig a SHORT 1.5foot hole that is as wide as a trash bag, then cut the bottom of the trash bag and put it in the hole. This way, i can essentially get an extra 2 feet of hole depth, because the bag will be partially out of the ground. So a 1.5 foot hole + trash bagfilled with dirt stiking out = 3 foothole. Plus once the plant hits the bottom of the dug hole, it will start growing new roots into the hard clay soil. But that wont be a big deal because it will have 3 feet of root structure already. Do you guys like my idea? I saw it somewhere...

its like a raised container planted in the ground.

you'll gain root space by doing such, so long as the surrounding environment is suited to growing.

go ahead with it, so long as doing so doesn't draw extra attention to your plot if its out in the wild and needs to be concealed.

instead of the garbage bag, use landscape fabric and chicken wire
it will have better aeration to the rootzone

The plot is tight. It goes like this: ravine, then flat space with direct overhead light, then a creek 15 feet away, then a road. The spot is completely concealed by trees and bushes, by the creek. Ive heard stay at home mothers going for walks and talking about their husbands clear as day while watering my babies. I walked up and down the street looking for my plot (I also stuck a red rag up in a branch right by my plot) and saw nothing. I'm not worried about smell really, lots of wild herbs and shit stinking the neighborhood up.

So yah basically raised grow bags as opposed to raised beds. I used some bags of OSH branded potting soil and my GDP is getting burned up atm. As soon as I get a chance I'm going to switch to Kellog Patio Plus, which is organic. Also a little hot though. My OSH doesn't really sell just plain dirt..

I have a pen built out of reg green wire fencing with 3inch squares, and then a roll of green hardwhare cloth that im going to make cages out of once the clones get big enough to put into the ground/ trash bags concotion im making

The cloth idea sounds too expensive. Im a working class boy

I don't know, growing in a neighborhood right off the road seems like a REALLY bad idea, no matter how many bushes there are. What about coming and going? If you can hear people talking (even "stay at home mothers" as you put it...) then people may be able to hear you, catch a glimpse, see you coming and going, etc. Especially if the this is near a frequently traversed area.

Short of that, I don't know that standard trash bags could support the lateral weight of 1.5 feet of moist dirt without stretching and tearing...

IMO...

good luck man.

Yah. The thing is I am a product of my enviroment. This is about as guerrilla I can get while still being able to water my plants. I will be using 2mm heavy duty trash bags. I will just make my holes deeper if the bags can't support the weight. Also if neighbors smell the dank it will be more like a whiff. They will think a skunk died and get on with their lives. I am by no means a scary person, and will just look like a kid driving home to school. The season is running out. I'll keep you guys posted on how this works out for me. I'm making a journal tonight, and I'll be getting pics 2 morrow. I'll post a link here for you guys to enjoy.

I've always been a brazen person. I think this grow will be my "hidden in plain site" attempt.

i agree with others--not the greatest spot.

regardless, i think a 2mil trashbag is not going to do the job for you. first off, 2mils is not that thick and as soon as it sits out in the sun/weather for a month it will get brittle and fall apart letting your soil pour out. you are definitely better off taking the suggestion given using chicken wire and landscape fabric. that's how tomhill does his monster plants, just search and look at the pics. another option, since chicken wire isn't the cheapest (but fabric is fairly cheap) would be to use air-pots since this is how they were intended to be used in the larger sizes as they don't come with bottoms. they basically make big raised beds.

good luck

Thanks for this. I just realized that my gravity fed irrigation wont work with raised beds. Kind of kills the whole gravity aspect of the system lol. Yah i have time seeing that my clones still need to get a little bigger before they are put directly into the ground.
