one of my favorite movies has to be "fresh"
don't tell the fellas, but i always watch "titanic" when its on.
kate winslett's tits are the bomb in that movie.
word up on boogie nights, i love that flick.
ever notice when the one dude is trying to talk to william h. macy while his wife is getting banged in the driveway.
macy says "if you don't mind, my wife has an ass in her cock in the driveway"
some of my fav directors:
scorsese, speilberg, kubrick, tarantino and michael bay. j/k bay can fuck up any good screenplay.

The Salton Sea, actually. Decent flick.

300
Lucky Number Slevin
Transformers
The Departed
V for Vendetta

Those are probably my top 5 of newer movies. Transformers gets a bad rap for being a Michael Bay film, and I mostly agree with that. Yes, some of it was so stupid it makes you want to stomp a kitten, but you go see that kind of movie for the robot fights. The one scene were Ironhide cannon-boosts over the girl while dodging the rockets is what you're paying to see. And those kinds of scenes, while few and far between, kicked much ass. So much ass that it's easy to forgive the stupidity of the rest of it. I realize it's one long GM ad, but someone's gotta pay for that kind of ass-kicking.

Slevin was just a good flick. Wish more movies were made this way, the way that actually keeps you interested until the end. Great writing too.

"But I'm not the guy you're looking for, I don't live here."
"Yeah, well, you look like the guy that lives here."
"Then you don't know what the guy that lives here looks like."

Didn't really like Vendetta the first time I watched it. After a couple more viewings it won me over. On a side note it's only just recently I found out Hugo Weaving was the voice of Megatron in Transformers. I'm sure I'm way behind on that little nugget of info.

As for movies I could watch over and over, or recommend to someone wanting to settle down with a good flick, I usually go with

Garden State
The Rundown
Children of Men

It's still early so if I think of others I really like I'll post 'em.

That made that whole lil film integrity speech for Boogie Nights??? I don't really think it's fair to put "Boogie Nights" on the same level as "City of God" or anywhere near it. City of God was a masterpiece.

Oh yeah, forgot my recommendation: "The Cell" was real good

If you want a really mind warped thinker flick, check out Dreams by Akira Kurosawa. (Also known as Akira Kurosawa's Dreams) As long as you don't mind subtitles, the film is a real mindbender. Watch it stoned and you'll be thinking.

Sometimes when I am bakin I like to find some old obscure "b" flicks. You never know who you will see or who will become big. Like good ole Peter Jackson. Now I love the LoTR series. But beforehand, his first movie is called Bad Taste. It's wonderfully horrible and well worth the viewing, for laughs alone. His next one was called Dead Alive. Rent that one and prepare for a laugh riot. One of my favorite lines comes out of that movie. "I kick ass FOR THE LORD". You'll see what I mean.

Some other flicks I like to get into are:

Requiem For a Dream
What Dreams May Come (cinematography is awesome in that)
Plan 9 From Outer Space (come on, it's sooo bad it's funny)
Young Frankenstein
The Dead Trillogy (Ramero was a genius)
The Last Supper (nother thinker film)

Just some of em. But yeah, I love movies, good and bad. I'm an aspiring author and I appreciate story. Even when the film is poor, if the story is strong it can carry a badly shot movie. Unless the Director is Uwe Boll. That guy should be shot for cinema assasination.

Ohh, and if you like anime...check out Akira. But find the old version, before the brainless masses "fixed it". The original is much better, the music score is outstanding, and the story is complex and involved. The remaster killed the heartbeat of the film. Another example of reasons to leave an original well enough alone.

And toons, gotta have some toons. When I need some serious nostalgia I have the original Popeye toon boxset. And a newly aquired complete collection of Tex Avery work. In stitches all night with those.

Damn that's alot. You hit on one of my favorite subjects.

cooked cook

bake at 420 until nicely toasted
give me an oldschool Humphrey Bogart flick any day of the week. that dude was a man's man...smokin, drinkin, punching dudes, chasin "dames" (in Bogie speak, not a cook term :wink)
Hell, pops digs his flicks too. Casablanca and Maltese Falcon being a couple of our favorites. Bogie sittin back, rollin his own smokes one handed. Too cool.
And I just love the way he talks too. Things like: (talking to the police in Maltese Falcon)
"sorry I got up on my hind legs, boys.....but Miles gettin bumped off, and you birds crackin foxy made me nervous" LOL

I don't think it's fair to compare a movie about [porn] with a movie about murder, poverty, and everything in between...

shall we compare apples & oranges next?

meh...if you didn't like 300 then there's something wrong with you. Like Transformers, it had its parts made of lose and fail, but overall it was win and awesome. Maybe because I have the luxury of not having been a Tranformers cartoon or Frank Miller fan so was able to appreciate them with a fresh set of eyes. Sure I can pick it apart if I wanted to, but overall I didn't feel cheated out of my money like I usually do.

As for The Rundown, sure there are better movies. And I wish they had cast someone besides Sean Scott. But that's the kind of role The Rock is meant to play, and he played it pretty well. I like Peter Berg's style, what can I say? He's a good director. I went into it convinced I'd be disappointed, but wasn't. And having Christopher Walken, even if it's far from his strongest role, is still a bonus.

Children of Men I like simply for technicalities. Not great acting (especially Julianne Moore) but the cinematography was great. Some pretty intense action here and there and none of that crappy quick-cut editing. Nice long takes that really put you in the middle of it. Jasper's indoor garden of Strawberry Cough didn't hurt the movie, either. ;-)

I'm talking about FILM here guys, I don't want to hear about American Pie, Saw, Charlies Angels, or whatever it is you young whipper snappers are watching on the screen these days.

I'm talking Vanilla Sky, The Passenger, A Streetcar Named Desire, etc..

I'm an indie film lover myself.. I've seen Year of the Dog, and Delirious recently. Delirious was great! Michael Pitt & Steve Buscemi.

so..let's discuss! who are your favorite directors? actors? films?

mine:
Directors: Wes Anderson, Michelangelo Antonioni, Hitchcock, Darren Aronofsky, Paul Thomas Anderson:jump:
Films: besides those listed above..Rain man, City of God, Magnolia, Boogie Nights..just to name a few. i watch tons of movies, and i've recently grown very fond of black and whites..

anyone else? :)
I repeat, NO CRAPPY MOVIES. No Scary Movie 1, 2, or 3. no White Girls, no I Know What You Did Last Summer...

I see you joined this year and with the influx of the fallen Sites through the years folks I've come to learn that every 4th page you need to post up what the threads all about since the first pages are sometimes never seen again unless brought to the front of the class yet again and again and again. This could turn into a great thread and just wanted those of you to know I think the guys talking about classics here (AT LEAST 10 years ago).

I know it's apples and oranges here but the man did say classics.

Mr.Wags :lurk:

Well, he also mentioned Vanilla Sky. Good movie and all, but I'd never call that a classic. If we only post about what we consider "classic", the thread will die a quick death. Mostly because aside from the few personal choices (like him thinking Vanilla Sky is classic) we're all going to agree on the regular classics (Godfather, Saving Private Ryan, etc).
