Any Real Film Buffs 'Round These Parts?

I'm talking about FILM here guys, I don't want to hear about American Pie, Saw, Charlies Angels, or whatever it is you young whipper snappers are watching on the screen these days.

I'm talking Vanilla Sky, The Passenger, A Streetcar Named Desire, etc..

I'm an indie film lover myself.. I've seen Year of the Dog, and Delirious recently. Delirious was great! Michael Pitt & Steve Buscemi.

so..let's discuss! who are your favorite directors? actors? films?

mine:
Directors: Wes Anderson, Michelangelo Antonioni, Hitchcock, Darren Aronofsky, Paul Thomas Anderson:jump:
Films: besides those listed above..Rain man, City of God, Magnolia, Boogie Nights..just to name a few. i watch tons of movies, and i've recently grown very fond of black and whites..

anyone else? :)
I repeat, NO CRAPPY MOVIES. No Scary Movie 1, 2, or 3. no White Girls, no I Know What You Did Last Summer...

Zarathustra? the man that created the first religion under one God? I don't know about film, but you seem to be a history buff.... and your avatar is Nietzsche? that is him, right?

The Coen Brothers made some amazing films.. Raising Arizona... Big Lebowski.. Fargo.. O Brother WAT... not nearly as good, but ANYWAY.. I love their work! They did comedy right.

I like Rain Man but I have watched it too many times... besides the Coen Bros movies, I love Scorsese films.. Goodfellas and Casino were amazing all around- from the cinematography, cast, everything

Zarathustra is from 'Thus Spake Zarathustra" by Nietzsche, which can be obtained HERE free & legally.

You are correct about my avatar though

Big Lebowski is a great movie. I've met the real "Dude" (Jeff Dowd) a few times. I've even had the chance to hang out with him while he was wasted at a party once. The man is hysterical .

Haven't seen Fargo yet, but I do own it.

[edit]also forgot about Kubrick!

have you ever seen any Paul Thomas Anderson films? He has a new one coming out called "There Will Be Blood".

Didn't know about the tie between Zarathustra and Nietzsche.. but Zarathustra (aka Zoroastra) was a prophet/teacher in Persia and founded Zoroastrianism... first monotheistic religion

I want to read that Nietzsche book though

Never heard of Thomas Anderson.. any good?

directors: kurosawa, seijun suzuki, almodovar, carol reed, spike lee, soderburgh

noah baumbach has done some excellent work: kicking and screaming(no not the one with will ferrell) and the squid and the whale

Im not that big on p.t.a. magnolia bored me. im sure it deserves another viewing though

i really love wes anderson and aronofsky, though the fountain had its bad parts, but was amazing at other parts.

random movies on my shelf-amarcord, the birds, blue velvet, do the right thing, easy rider, wages of fear, the unbearable lightness of being, yojimbo, tokyo drifter, le trou, amarcord, charade, wonder boys, brazil

6 years or so ago in high school, i was a huge film buff, saw every foreign film i could get my hands on.

I know who Zarathustra was in history :), Nietzsche speaks of it multiple times. ex: In the introduction by his sister he says..
"I had to do a PERSIAN the honour of identifying him with this creature of my
fancy. Persians were the first to take a broad and comprehensive view of
history. Every series of evolutions, according to them, was presided over
by a prophet; and every prophet had his 'Hazar,'--his dynasty of a thousand
years."

anyway, you're going off topic. i tried to make a book thread to talk about nietzsche and others, but no one seemed interested in what i was reading  hehe. you should have posted there ;)

sorry.. my bad.. good quote though

Did you like Full Metal Jacket by Kubrick? The movie was boot camp... I don't know what the other half was.. there was no transition.. it seemed copied-and-pasted

What was the best comedy ever?

i've only seen it once, a very long time ago and to be honest I don't really remember it :asskick:. hmmm, maybe i'll borrow my friend's kubrick collection. I certainly wouldn't mind watching Lolita again.

hmm, best comedy? can't say. i don't watch many comedies. what would your answer be?

I thought this was an indie/obscure movie thread. Keep 'em coming.

I've enjoyed the iranian(I think) movies Children of Heaven and to a lesser extent The Color of Paradise. The director Majid Majidi's other films are "meh" IMO though.

To add to Koyanisqatsi, there's Chronos and Baraka. Same style: an artful, dialogue free documentary of the natural and human world.

Fantastic Planet was more of a psychedelic romp through the drug induced art style of the 70s. Certainly a unique experience, but not exactly what I'd call a good movie.
