sorry i had to ask here, but I know that there isn't a question off topic or not that wont/cant be answered here.

prolly a simple fix i hope?

the immediate area around the base of my comode/toilet is veeery lightly leaking.....sort of saturates the carpet now in the immediate area.

I ask here because i obviously cant call the landlord or a mr. fix-it

..and I have no experience w/ toilet repair.

i'm on a private septic system in the mtns if that makes any dif.

..seriously thanks for any help guys! :headbange

i only repaired one or two in my time in that type of work... (i wonder why i got a new job) however i think that sounds like like you need a new seal/gasket they are wax and relatively cheap as i recall.. some labor to install though. a bit messy heh.

you can replace the wax seal for like $10 that is the only thing that would be leaking froom down under the toilet. Now if it has been leaking long be ready to see some nasty black mold and possible decayed wood

more work than i wanna do, but ...i suppose it only gets worse tho.

wax seal eh...home depot is a 40 min. drive one way...90 min roundtrip....if i gas or eat.

thanks for the tips guys...any more advanced help on this would be appreciated.

can't you order some wax seal from the home depot website? even if your mail isn't sent directly to your house i suspect you pick it up some where thats closer than 90 miles away round trip.

anyway hurry up and fix it so you can contribute to my DIY thread.... hahaha

i'm actually in the middle of remodeling one of my bathrooms....so i have a little knowledge.....sounds like the seal like everyone else is suggesting....pretty much all u need to do is turn off the water...disconnect the water line to the toilet....remove the two bolts that hold the base to the floor...the toilet will come right off... you'll see a rubber gasket type thing with the wax seal on top of it....removing the old wax is pretty nasty and you'll definitely need a pair of latex gloves....after u have replaced the wax, put everything back together and u should be good to go....sucks u have to drive that far though

hope this helps

peace

It's definately the wax ring, as everyone has said.

Couple of hints for installation:

Make sure the wax is at room temperature when going to install it. After replacing the toilet and hand tighening the closet bolts, sit on your toilet to apply good even pressure to make sure you get a positive seal. If the wax is cold, it will not seal as well and you may get another leak in the near future.

Also, go easy when tightening those closet bolts, as you know porcelain can and will crack easily, so hand tight and then a quarter to half a turn with a wrench and you are golden.

After removing the toilet, stuff a rag into the pipe to protect yourself from toxic/smelly sewer gases.

And last but not least, when closing the cold water supply be careful not to overturn the shut-off valve, they break easily.

It's only a 15 minute job, and super easy.

Good luck!

BTW you can pick up these wax rings from any plumbing supply house, local hardware store, etc. So if you have something like that closer to you than casa de pot, give them a shot.

here's a tip i learned when doing renos, buy 2 seals, especially if you are replacing this by yourself. If you put the toilet down on it incorrectly (alot of people seem to on their first time, I sure did) you can damage it to the point of it being garbage. It'd suck to drive all the way to HD and back and then need another one.

A couple of other other things that help.

1) Buy the rings that have that extender horn on the bottom. That helps direct the liquid away from the pipe-wax seal.

2) Clean and dry the bottom of the commode. Then heat it with a hair dryer until it is hot enough to melt the wax a little. Makes a wonderful seal when the wax is melted onto the bottom like that.

3) Shim the commode so that does not rock. I had one on a tile floor that would last 2 months then leak. I leveled the commode with that epoxy paste junk (wax paper on the tile side) and haven't had a problem since. That's been 15 years now....

Good Luck.

Yukon, that wax seal is taking a dump on you! It, and the closet bolts need to be replaced. If you dont get it fixed it will eventually rot out your floor, ruin your carpet, and it will stink! You have some time. Order one over the net, if it will cost you less in gas and time. Shut off your supply valve. The best way to get the tops off the closet bolts is with a sawzall-use a blade for metal cutting (small teeth). Then lift the whole toilet up vertical. Replace. The instructions on the box for the wax seal will explain it all. Fairly easy procedure once you get used to it.

P.S. Buy 2 wax seals and 2 sets of closet bolts so if you screw up. You have replacements.

Thank God, JJ was the first to state the obvious. DRAIN THE TANK. I had a neighbor who went to replace his wax gasket and the stupid bastard never drained the tank. Well, actually he did, while removing the toilet. It drained all over the floor. Boy, was his wife pissed!

as a plumber myself
one of the most common jobs i get to do is . . . .repairing wc's where folks have tried(with the best intentions)to do the repair thierselfs

if your going to do it yourself then the advice i will give is thus
before you start work make sure the cistern is completly dry(use a sponge in the inside to collect the water that wont flush)
carefully remove the parts(that way you wont lose any . . . very common)
the wing nuts holding the cistern to the pan are only HAND TIGHT(overtightning will possibly damage the fixings and wc)
if you dont think you can do the job DONT TRY
remember a plumber will charge more to repair your work than to do the original job
as said it is a relatively easy job to do just take your time and dont overdo things
good luck with it

are you positive it's coming from the very bottom part of the toilet? you might want to check where the water supply line connects to the toilet and just make sure it's nice and tight and the water's not coming from there. my toilet was leaking recently and i couldn't figure out where it was coming from at first cuz the water line was just leaking really really slowly. but that was cuz my float valve was ****ed up and when i was messing with the float valve i turned it and that caused the connection to get looser (the water line connects to the bottom of the float valve)

This is a very good tip. It would suck to drive all that way and screw up the only seal you have :bashhead:
Been there, and done that! First time I did it I screwed the first seal (hey, it was my practice run!!). Had to run and grab another.
Good luck, and kindest regards,
