Que's la que, fellow tokers and keyboard pokers, any of you fine growers also cultivate the sonic arts?
I myself am a producer. Real, as in i can make the same beat twice and i was classically trained, i'm not just pressing buttons at random(and yeah, i've had to redo WHOLE projects... crashes suck).
I must admit right now i just use fruity loops, because in my neck of the woods that's the standard(i'm from a place very much related to a certain caribbean rythm) but i learned with my friends setup, a wall full of vinyl, a turntable, a mixer and and mpc-60II.
My main art is hip hop and reggaeton, but i take it to the limits. With hip hop it's cool, cause there are mainstream trip hop and eclectic hip hop acts, but with reggaeton, which is dominated by "dembows"(kinda like riddims, only it's just the drums) that haven't changed in years, anything that sounds a lil bit off formula is considered trash, but slowly i've been gaining more leeway in how weird i'm allowed to get without getting booed, hehe.
Right now I have some acts and I'm known, but considering most of what i do is completely in contrast with the necessities of commercial reggaeton, and the MCs that have approached me to produce for them don't cowtow to s*it mongers either, we've stayed low key. kinda cultish.
Luckily, people are starting to come around, and since one weird "b-side" style song isn't gonna hurt anyone, some acts with radio time have started shopping around my tracks. Soon as the first royalty check comes in, i'm buying myself a bunch of vinyl, a turntable and one or two synths. :-D
I'm in this just for the helluvit and because i want to spread a certain message, i think selling a couple tracks to big acts or maybe even becoming a mainstream act aren't bad things, but i still dont' care if i never make it big. i just want money for more equipment anyways, hehe. maybe a few new lights too, haha.
well, i'm getting rantish, so bye, haha. post up your setups or your experiences in this crazy track we call life.
keep the phones on your head and the fader in your hand....
