Anybody remember seeing Public Image on American Bandstand in 1980? PI punked Dick Clark in the interview, big deal. But if you saw it live there was something much better and it may have been edited from Dick Clark Productions archives.
During the opening song, Lydon not only exaggerated the fact he was expected to lip-sync. The whole damn song was pre-recorded.
Lydon made such a mockery of everything that AB went to commercial break a few seconds early (with Lydon hitting the drummer's crash with his microphone.) Nobody rocks that straight-from-the-psych-ward facial expression like Johnny Lydon and this was no exception.
Moments before the break, Dick Clark runs onto the stage area in extreme panic. I've never seen anything like the red face and bulging eyes, running between band member's and waving his hands.
Clark tried to be cozy in the interview and Lydon was rotten. But it's truly entertaining to see Clark running around the stage like a man possessed, as if he and his show was finished, all caught on national tv.
